Abstract

Population aging-resulting from falling fertility rates, declining mortality, and increased longevity-shapes the profile and the needs of a growing number of countries. How effective has the World Bank been in tailoring its support to provide an adequate response to this evolving challenge? This evaluation is the first report from the Independent Evaluation Group to assess the World Bank's contribution to diagnosing client countries' demographic issues related to population aging; understanding the variance in policy needs and context specificities; and providing vision, tools, and resources to respond to challenges in countries at different stages of aging. This evaluation aims to inform the World Bank Group's Board of Executive Directors, management, and staff about the relevance, coherence, and operationalization of World Bank support to aging countries. The World Bank is increasingly called on to offer support to respond to the deep socioeconomic challenges its clients are facing because of population aging. Providing adequate responses to aging countries will become more of a priority as the phenomenon accelerates and becomes more prominent in World Bank client countries.

Abstract

There are not many books about how people get younger. It doesn't happen very often. But Ageing with Smartphones in Ireland documents a radical change in the experience of ageing.Based on two ethnographies, one within Dublin and the other from the Dublin region, the book shows that people, rather than seeing themselves as old, focus on crafting a new life in retirement. Our research participants apply new ideals of sustainability both to themselves and to their environment. They go for long walks, play bridge, do yoga and keep as healthy as possible. As part of Ireland's mainstream middle class, they may have more time than the young to embrace green ideals and more money to move to energy-efficient homes, throw out household detritus and protect their environment. The smartphone has become integral to this new trajectory. For some it is an intimidating burden linked to being on the wrong side of a new digital divide. But for most, however, it has brought back the extended family and old friends, and helped resolve intergenerational conflicts though facilitating new forms of grandparenting. It has also become central to health issues, whether by Googling information or looking after frail parents. The smartphone enables this sense of getting younger as people download the music of their youth and develop new interests. This is a book about acknowledging late middle age in contemporary Ireland. How do older people in Ireland experience life today?

Abstract

This paper contributes to the existing literature in several ways. First of all, to the best of our knowledge this is the first paper to exclusively model and analyze the impact of aging on long-term growth in Thailand. Although there several studies that have analyzed the relationship between aging and private saving in Thailand, this is the first to employ a cointegration analysis. This approach is more suitable given that we are interested in the long-term relationship between the two and the fact that demographic changes are slow. Moreover, this paper is the first most comprehensive study of the macroeconomic and fiscal impacts of aging in Thailand. Existing studies have focused on how aging impacts one variable (Pootrakool and others 2005; IMF 2019). The rest of this paper is organized as follows. Section two presents an assessment of the impact of aging on macroeconomic variables. Section three analyzes how aging is likely to impact Thailand's fiscal standing. Section four discusses various reforms that can help mitigate the negative impact of aging on long-term growth and fiscal sustainability and section five concludes.

Abstract

"Handbook of the Biology of Aging, Ninth Edition, provides a comprehensive synthesis and review of the latest and most important advances and themes in modern biogerontology. The book focuses on the trend of 'big data' approaches in the biological sciences, presenting new strategies to analyze, interpret and understand the enormous amounts of information being generated through DNA sequencing, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomics methodologies applied to aging related problems. Sections cover longevity pathways and interventions that modulate aging, innovative tools that facilitate systems-level approaches to aging research, the mTOR pathway and its importance in age-related phenotypes, and much more"--
