Abstract

Iron Will lays bare the role of extractivist policies and efforts to resist these policies through a deep ethnographic exploration of globally important iron ore mining in Brazil and India. Markus Kröger addresses resistance strategies to extractivism and tracks their success, or lack thereof, through a comparison of peaceful and armed resource conflicts, explaining how different means of resistance arise. Using the distinctly different contexts and political systems of Brazil and India highlights the importance of local context for resistance. For example, if there is an armed conflict at a planned mining site, how does this influence the possibility to use peaceful resistance strategies? To answer such questions, KrOEger assesses the inter-relations of contentious, electoral, institutional, judicial, and private politics that surround conflicts and interactions, offering a new theoretical framework of 'investment politics' that can be applied generally by scholars and students of social movements, environmental studies, and political economy, and even more broadly in Social Scientific and Environmental Policy research. By drawing on a detailed field research and other sources, this book explains precisely which resistance strategies are able to influence both political and economic outcomes. KrOEger expands the focus of traditionally Latin American extractivism research to other contexts such as India and the growing extractivist movement in the Global North. In addition, as the book is a multi-sited political ethnography, it will appeal to sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, geographers, and others using field research among other methods to understand globalization and global political interactions. It is the most comprehensive book on the political economy and ecology of iron ore and steel. This is astonishing, given the fact that iron ore is the second-most important commodity in the world after oil.

Abstract

"Writing the Empire is a collective biography of the McIlwraiths, a family of politicians, entrepreneurs, businesspeople, scientists, and scholars. Known for their contributions to literature, politics, and anthropology, the McIlwraiths originated in Ayrshire, Scotland and spread across the British Empire, specifically North America and Australia, from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Focusing on imperial networking, Writing the Empire reflects on the McIlwraiths' life-writing through three generations, contained in correspondence, diaries, memoirs, and estate papers, along with published works by members of the family. By moving from generation to generation, but also from one stage of a person's life to the next, the author investigates some of the ways in which various McIlwraiths, both men and women, articulated their identity as subjects of the British Empire over time. Kröller identifies parallel and competing forms of communication that involved major public figures beyond the family's immediate circle, and explores the challenges issued by Indigenous people to imperial ideologies. Drawing from private papers and public archives, Writing the Empire is an illuminating biography that will appeal to readers interested in the links between life-writing and imperial history."--

Abstract

"Ynzer Łidła - Our Songs. Songs, Lullabies and Counting-out Rhymes from Wilamowice", is the result of titanic work done by Tymoteusz Król, who documented oral traditions of a small ethnic group living in Wilamowice, a town between Oświęcim and Bielsko-Biała. Wilamowianie came from Western Europe in the 13th century and brought their own language and traditions. Unfortunately, due to their distinctness, Wilamowianie were often persecuted, especially in the 20th century. As a result, their culture and language began to die out. Tymoteusz Król, who undertook the task of documenting songs and lullabies, collected directly from the oldest language users, not only saved them from oblivion, but also started the process of revitalizing wymysiöeryś language, which is now used by the growing number of speakers. For some of its speakers the songs contained in this collection were the first opportunity to get to know their indigenous culture.

Abstract

In present book, an analysis of the literature pertaining to parametric and non-parametric descriptions of surface topography in basics manufacturing processes (e.g., turning, milling, grinding) has been performed. The book focuses on the improvement of machining processes, with particular attention to the functional properties of surfaces, and, also, in the control of process parameters by a selected group of parameters. Here, the specific areas of interest are: surface topography analysis; advanced manufacturing metrology; surface metrology; measurement science; and measurement systems. The proposed approach of the description of surface for the functional properties of surfaces leads to the control of the whole manufacturing process, reduction of production cost by eliminating manufacturing defects and energy consumption, as well as the improvements of surface quality. The study presented in the book is a compendium of knowledge regarding surface metrology and emerging aim in a novel scientific approach.
