Abstract

A radical and necessary rethinking of trans care. What does it mean for trans people to show up for one another, to care deeply for one another? How have failures of care shaped trans lives? What care practices have trans subjects and communities cultivated in the wake of widespread transphobia and systemic forms of trans exclusion? Trans Care is a critical intervention in how care labor and care ethics have been thought, arguing that dominant modes of conceiving and critiquing the politics and distribution of care entrench normative and cis-centric familial structures and gendered arrangements. A serious consideration of trans survival and flourishing requires a radical rethinking of how care operates. Forerunners is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital works. Written between fresh ideas and finished books, Forerunners draws on scholarly work initiated in notable blogs, social media, conference plenaries, journal articles, and the synergy of academic exchange. This is gray literature publishing: where intense thinking, change, and speculation take place in scholarship.

Abstract

Since the mid-1990s, there has been a seismic shift in attitudes toward gay and lesbian people, with a majority of Americans now supporting same-sex marriage and relations between same-sex, consenting adults. However, support for transgender individuals lags far behind; a significant majority of Americans do not support the right of transgender people to be free from discrimination in housing, employment, public spaces, health care, legal documents, and other areas. In this book, Melissa R. Michelson and Brian F. Harrison examine what tactics are effective in changing public opinion regarding transgender people.

Abstract

Activist Identity Development of Transgender Social Justice Activists and Educators introduces an anti-oppressive, critical and intersectional approach to social justice activism and education, and adult education for social change. This book examines how state governments, laws, policies, institutions, and systems of dominant hegemonic ideologies, such as education systems, the legal systems, and their gatekeepers influence the social position and epistemic agency of transgender and gender non-conforming people (TGNC), therefore shaping their social justice activist and educator identity development. The research was conducted with eight TGNC social justice activists and educators from eight different countries, who were at the time in leadership positions in organizations working on the advancement of LGBTQI human rights. This volume seeks not only to understand and interpret power structures, power relations and inequalities in society which determine social positionality of trans activists and influence the formation and development of their activist identity, but also to challenge them by raising critical consciousness, questioning dominant cultural, political, and social domains which determine knowledge production. It advocates for a trans-affirming, intersectional approach to educational provision, theory, and research.

Abstract

"An illuminating look at the transatlantic, transgender community that shaped the history and study of sexuality. From the turn of the twentieth century to the 1950s, a group of transgender people on both sides of the Atlantic created communities that profoundly shaped the history and study of sexuality. By exchanging letters and pictures among themselves they established private networks of affirmation and trust, and by submitting their stories and photographs to medical journals and popular magazines they sought to educate both doctors and the public. Others of My Kind draws on archives in Europe and North America to tell the story of this remarkable transatlantic transgender community. This book uncovers threads of connection between Germany, the United States, and the Netherlands to discover the people who influenced the work of authorities like Magnus Hirschfeld, Harry Benjamin, and Alfred Kinsey not only with their clinical presentations, but also with their personal relationships. With more than 170 colour and black and white illustrations, including many stunning, previously unpublished photographs, Others of My Kind celebrates the faces, lives, and personal networks of those who drove twentieth-century transgender history."--

Abstract

“This overtly political practical theology provides chaplains and other healthcare workers with concepts and practices to hate-proof hospitals on behalf of trans people. Yetunde draws on the Christian New Testament, Buddhist sacred texts, and womanist theology to articulate the Parable of Our Collective Survival as a touchstone for effective public pastoral theology and trans advocacy.” –Duane Bidwell, Professor of Practical Theology, Spiritual Care, and Counseling, Claremont School of Theology, USA “Integrating passionate socio-political engagement and legal acumen with spiritual insight from Buddhist and Christian traditions, Pamela Ayo Yetunde makes a convincing case for welcoming and full inclusion of the vulnerable among us who tend to be despised by many in society, making an appeal for disobedience, resistance, and eventual transformation of oppressive laws designed to exclude ‘the least of these (Mt. 25:40).’” –Ruben L.F. Habito, Professor of World Religions and Spirituality, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, USA This book is a response to the Trump-Pence Administration’s reversal of transgender rights. Pamela Ayo Yetunde offers an intersectionally-robust turn in pastoral and spiritual care—pastoral and spiritual care as religious freedom law literacy, public advocacy, East-West integration, and systems agitation. In this book, Yetunde draws on the works of Zen master Thich Nhat Hahn; black queer Buddhists Rev. angel Kyodo Williams, Lama Rod Owens, and Dr. Jasmine Syedullah; the Christian solidarity of Brita Gill-Auster; and the Christian witness of scholar and television host Melissa Harris-Perry. Her data comes from surveys with pastoral and spiritual care providers and educators, and Boston Medical Center’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery’s medical director and chaplain. This book brings chaplains out of their closets of non-confrontation into the streets of public practical theology.

Abstract

"While the growing attention to trans rights and the development of trans specific interest groups suggest that the time is right for a trans rights movement akin to prior civil rights movements, The Politics of Right Sex explores the limitations of rights-based mobilization and litigation for advancing the interests of trans communities. Synthesizing critical theory, transgender studies, and extant law and society research, author Courtenay W. Daum argues that trans individuals, particularly those situated at the intersection of gender, race, class, and immigration status, are regulated by myriad forces of governmentality that work to maintain the sex and gender binaries and associated power hierarchies. Because many informal practices and norms are located beyond the reach of civil rights laws, a trans politics of rights may produce some modest legal and legislative reforms but will not eliminate the disciplinary forces that work to subject trans individuals and will privilege those transgender individuals who are able to conform with dominant gender norms at the expense of the interests of gender non-conforming, gender queer, trans people of color, and others unable or unwilling to embrace a transnormative presentation of self and/or lifestyle. As such, The Politics of Right Sex advocates for a more confrontational approach that directly engages and challenges the hegemonic power structures that govern and discipline trans individuals, to disrupt the dominant discourse and hierarchical power arrangements in pursuit of collective liberation for all as opposed to rights for some"--
