Abstract

This new edition will grow to three volumes and significantly expand existing sections on medical management of children with cerebral palsy, research, education and therapies. The first volume will cover the cause of CP, the underlying pathology in the brain and the secondary pathologies in different tissues, such as muscle and bone. There are a fair number of controversies and new techniques, such as PET scans, that are getter attention to make earlier diagnosis. It is still not clear whether early diagnosis makes a long term difference. Epidemiology will also be discussed. The second volume will focus on general medical concerns related to CP on each of the medical specialties and the musculoskeletal section - which served as the main focus of the previous edition. This volume will be updated with an emphasis on gait disorders, spasticity, seizures and movement disorders. New research and techniques on the hip and spine areas will be added as well. The third and final volume will be an expanded and comprehensive resource on therapies. More detail on the latest outcome research and techniques will be provided along with sections on orthotics and novel treatments and techniques. This reference work will build on gaps within the first edition and continue to be the definitive guide for rehabilitation physicians, orthopedics, neurologists and therapists who treat children with CP .

Abstract

This book provides basic knowledge and skills for non-dental healthcare practitioners, helping them recognize the importance of oral health, perform initial oral health assessments, consult dentists when necessary, and offer preventive advice and counseling. As people age, they tend to refrain from routine dental care, while the number of consultations with non-dental healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists etc.) increases. However, few healthcare providers are adequately trained to assess oral problems. The relevance of this book is underscored by the recently published European policy recommendations on oral health in older adults by the European College of Gerodontology and the European Geriatric Medicine Society, which highlight the importance of the active involvement of non-dental primary care practitioners in oral health assessment and promotion. These two respected European Societies have identified a significant gap in education, practice and health policies and described the necessary action plans. This book helps to fill the educational gap identified in the recommendations and will be an invaluable tool for all healthcare providers working with older people.

Abstract

This book focuses on evidence-based occupational therapy in the care of older adults in different clinical settings, from home to acute hospital, from intensive care unit to rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. Occupational therapy has progressively developed as a new discipline aiming to improve the daily life of individuals of different ages, from children to older adults. The book first reviews the interaction between occupational therapy and geriatrics and then discusses in depth how occupational therapy interventions are applied in the community, in the acute hospital and in the nursing home. It highlights the key role of occupational therapy in the management of frail patients, including critically ill older patients and persons with dementia, and describes in detail how to maintain occupational therapy interventions across different settings to avoid the fragmentation of care. The ageing population requires new innovative approaches to improve the quality of life, and as such this book provides clinicians with handy, key information on how to implement occupational therapy in the daily clinical care of older adults based on the current scientific evidence. .

Abstract

This book describes the development of portable, wearable, and highly customizable hand exoskeletons to aid patients suffering from hand disabilities. It presents an original approach for the design of human hand motion assistance devices that relies on (i) an optimization-based kinematic scaling procedure, which guarantees a significant adaptability to the user’s hands motion, and (ii) a topology optimization-based design methodology, which allowed the design of a lightweight, comfortable device with a high level of performance. The book covers the whole process of hand exoskeleton development, from establishing a new design strategy,to the construction and testing of hand exoskeleton prototypes, using additive manufacturing techniques. As such, it offers timely information to both researchers and engineers developing human motion assistance systems, especially wearable ones.
