La recherche universitaire répugne souvent à s’emparer d’œuvres trop récentes ; la tâche est, il est vrai, doublement délicate. Délicate d’abord parce que l’analyse, qui se construit habituellement dans un rapport de distance entre l’objet analysé et le sujet analysant, s’élabore ici dans une sorte de rapport immédiat et direct entre l’écriture et sa réception. Le principe même du colloque ajoute encore à la difficulté de la tâche en autorisant la confrontation auteur-critique ; alors que le premier considère l’œuvre comme intention de création, le second l’envisage déjà comme un objet d’interprétation. L’écart ontologique qui résulte de cette rencontre improbable peut alors se résoudre en confrontation stérile. Isabelle Hausser se prête à l’exercice en évitant précisément ce piège ; elle abandonne sans ciller l’interprétation à ses lecteurs, préférant nourrir de ses commentaires la dialectique création-réception : toujours attentives aux interprétations que suscite son œuvre, ses interventions alimentent le rapport tensif entre création et réception, en laissant au critique la liberté même de sa lecture. L’œuvre d’Isabelle Hausser n’en semble que plus résolument moderne, de son temps, du nôtre. Moderne donc parce qu’ouverte, ouverte sur le monde moderne qui l’inspire, ouverte quant aux procédés d’écriture auxquels elle recourt, ouverte par les genres et les tonalités qu’elle traverse, ouverte encore par ses fins mêmes, ouverte enfin par les pistes qu’elles suggèrent avec d’autres arts ou d’autres imaginaires. Loin des modes éphémères, le roman haussérien méritait donc ce premier colloque universitaire, « Imaginaire et écriture dans le roman haussérien ».

This book explores Victorian and modernist haunted houses in female-authored ghost stories as representations of the architectural uncanny. It reconsiders the gendering of the supernatural in terms of unease, denial, disorientation, confinement and claustrophobia within domestic space. Drawing on spatial theory by Gaston Bachelard, Henri Lefebvre and Elizabeth Grosz, it analyses the reoccupation and appropriation of space by ghosts, women and servants as a means of addressing the opposition between the past and modernity. The chapters consider a range of haunted spaces, including ancestral mansions, ghostly gardens, suburban villas, Italian churches and houses subject to demolition and ruin. The ghost stories are read in the light of women’s non-fictional writing on architecture, travel, interior design, sacred space, technology, the ideal home and the servant problem. Women writers discussed include Elizabeth Gaskell, Margaret Oliphant, Vernon Lee, Edith Wharton, May Sinclair and Elizabeth Bowen. This book will appeal to students and researchers in the ghost story, Female Gothic and Victorian and modernist women’s writing, as well as general readers with an interest in the supernatural.
