Abstract

Two major projects, Tipperne Bird Sanctuary and Skjern River Pump Stations, illustrated in detail with photos, plans, sections and line drawings. Tipperne: Includes a watching tower, research center, a bird hide, and a workshop building. The bird watching tower was developed through the synthesis of the open, flat wetland geography and dense moisture in the air, and the techniques of a local factory specialising in the production of masts in solid cylindrical iron bars. The platform provides an elevated framing of the landscape, a space which can be either closed to offer a secluded position for bird counters, or opened-up to the view. The structural system is designed as a jettying frame expanding in width as it rises, allowing a small footprint to incrementally widen to support a larger platform above. Skjern River Pump Stations project : As a result of the restoration of the Skjern River basin in 2002, a vast and rich natural area has arisen, becoming an attractive visitor destination. A framework for the new life of the area has been provided with the rebuilding and extension of three pump stations, in the form of exhibition spaces, indoor and outdoor viewpoints to look out over the landscape, rooms for the organisation of events, and better accessibility.

Abstract

Prepared by the Standards Committee on Fitting of Hydraulic Conductivity Using Statistical Spatial Estimation (called KSTAT) of the Standards Development Council of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute of ASCEEstimation of Aquifer Hydraulic Properties by Inverse Numerical Modeling of Aquifer Pumping Tests is the fifth in a series of standards that seeks to enhance the probabilistic and empirical characterization and understanding of the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Kstat), a key groundwater parameter.ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 70-19 provides guidelines for estimating the hydraulic properties of a groundwater system by inverse numerical modeling of aquifer pumping tests. This standard is applicable to situations where inverse methods based on analytical solutions for aquifer response to pumping are not applicable. Guidance is provided on using a numerical groundwater flow model to simulate an aquifer pumping test and estimate aquifer hydraulic properties. The methodology is based on minimizing residual error between observed and simulated heads by adjusting (calibrating) values of the pertinent aquifer hydraulic properties, for example, transmissivity, storativity, and leakance, such that there is a close match between the observed and simulated values.Standard ANSI/ASCE/EWRI 70-19 will be useful to environmental engineers, water resources engineers, and any professional who uses hydraulics in engineering.

Abstract

This handbook summarizes the research results on hydraulic problems in centrifugal pump design and describes the state of the art in a comprehensive way. For this 4th edition, current research results of practical relevance were included. The selection and presentation of the material was oriented towards the needs of pump manufacturers, system planners and pump operators. Much space is devoted to understanding the physical relationships as essential knowledge for correct application. The latter is supported by more than 160 diagrams and tables for calculation and problem diagnosis . The book has been extensively updated. New additions: - A separate chapter on "Vibrations on vertical pumps". - Measurements of hydraulic exciter and impeller reaction forces - Alternating stresses and fatigue fractures of impellers - a critical study on the accuracy of numerical flow calculations of pumps - Design of inlet housings and double spirals for multistage pumps.

Abstract

New challenges in water systems toward safety, efficiency, reliability, and system flexibility will be fundamental in the near future. In this book, readers can find different approaches that include safety analysis, system efficiency improvements, and new innovative designs. The risk function is a measure of its vulnerability level and security loss. Analyses of transient flows associated with the most dangerous operating conditions, are compulsory to grant system liability in terms of water quantity, quality, and system management. Specific equipment, such as air valves, is used in pressurized water pipes to manage the air inside, associated with the emptying and filling process. Advanced tools are developed toward near-future smart water grids. The water system efficiency and water–energy nexus, through the implementation of suitable pressure control and energy recovery devices, as well as pumped-storage hydropower, provide guidelines toward the most technical and environmental cost-effective solutions. Integrated analysis of water and energy allows more reliable, flexible, and sustainable eco-design projects, reaching better resilience systems. Hydraulic simulators and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), conjugating with field or experimental tests, supported by advanced smart equipment, allow a better design, control, and complex event anticipation occurrence to attain high levels of water system security and efficiency.

Abstract

Human milk is uniquely tailored to meet infants’ specific nutritional requirements. However, it is more than just “milk”. This dynamic and bioactive fluid allows mother–infant signalling over lactation, guiding the infant in the developmental and physiological processes. It exerts protection and life-long biological effects, playing a crucial role in promoting healthy growth and optimal cognitive development. The latest scientific advances have provided insight into different components of human milk and their dynamic changes over time. However, the complexity of human milk composition and the synergistic mechanisms responsible for its beneficial health effects have not yet been unravelled. Filling this knowledge gap will shed light on the biology of the developing infant and will contribute to the optimization of infant feeding, particularly that of the most vulnerable infants. Greater understanding of human milk will also help in elucidating the best strategies for its storage and handling. The increasing knowledge on human milk’s bioactive compounds together with the rapidly-advancing technological achievements will greatly enhance their use as prophylactic or therapeutic agents. The current Special Issue aims to welcome original works and literature reviews further exploring the complexity of human milk composition, the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects associated with breastfeeding, and the factors and determinants involved in lactation, including its promotion and support.

Abstract

The depletion of natural energy resources provides evidential adverse impacts on world economy functionality. The strong requirement of a sustainable energy supply has escalated intensive research and the discovery of cleaner energy sources, as well as efficient energy management practices. In the context of a circular economy, this research not only targets the optimisation of resources utilisation at different stages but also emphasises the eco-design of products to extend production life spans. Based on this concept, this book discusses the roles of process integration approaches, renewable energy sources utilisation and design modifications in addressing the process energy and exergy efficiency improvement. The primary focus is to enhance the economic and environmental performance through process analysis, modelling and optimisation. The articles mainly show the contribution of each aspect: (a) design and numerical study for innovative energy-efficient technologies, (b) process integration—heat and power, (c) process energy efficiency or emission analysis, and (d) optimisation of renewable energy resources’ supply chain. The articles are based on the latest contribution of this journal’s Special Issues in the 21st conference entitled “Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction (PRES)”. This book is complemented with an editorial review to highlight the broader state-of-the-art development.
