Ook dit essay behandelt een drievoudig thema dat één geheel vormt: kunst, kunstenaar en kunstbeschouwer. Het wil de lezer brengen van kijken naar zien, naar verder zien. Wie kunst bevraagt, ondervraagt het leven dat op zijn beurt weer naar kunstexpressie vraagt. Hierin hebben kunstenaar en kunstbeschouwer een wezenlijk aandeel. Samen brengen zij de artistieke scheppingsdaad tot leven.

Grootenboer is interested in art as philosophy, that is, art as a consideration of thinking. She insists that early modern art can be viewed through the lenses of contemporary interest and means. She argues that art is capable of articulating thoughts and shaping concepts in visual terms, and thus directly engages with the development of philosophical ideas. In particular, she explores the ways seventeenth-century paintings, in the wake of the Reformation and the rise of humanism, became sites of speculation about the possibilities and limitations of thinking as such. She focuses not on how thought is expressed in pictorial statements but on what remains unspoken in painting, implicit, and inexpressible--a quality that she calls pensiveness. Different from the self-aware images propounded by W. J. T. Mitchell, which seem in control of the interpretations they elicit, pensive images are speculative, pointing beyond mere interpretation. As an alternative pictorial category, akin to narrative or allegorical painting, pensive images can articulate the complexities of philosophical ideas, and thus gain new relevance in more recent debates on the nature of the image in visual culture.

'Art Isn't Fair' is the title of the last video completed in 2012 by Allan Sekula (1951-2013), a work commenting on the rise of art fairs as yet another international gathering of moneyed elites. This new compilation of textual, photographic and filmic essays underscores Sekula's longstanding engagement with the many intersections between art, photography, and the shifting terrain of power struggles from both a local and international perspective. Bringing together an ensemble of works that Sekula never had the chance to publish together before his death in 2013, this new collection expands our sense of the persistent depth and breadth of Sekula's concerns and commitments. The volume includes the widely-cited extended Sekula essay, 'The Body and the Archive' (1986), less well-known but equally comprehensive historical critiques such as 'Photography between Labour and Capital' (1983), the artist's reconsideration of his own early work, plus numerous essays on other artists and photographers from Walker Evans to Robert Mapplethorpe, Susan Meiselas, James Benning and the contemporary Canadian masters of political montage, Carole Condé & Karl Beveridge. The volume concludes with the narrative transcript along with select stills from 'Art Isn't Fair'.

Verbeelding is heel belangrijk voor de mens en is er altijd. In dit boek ligt het accent op de relatie tussen verbeelding en kunst, op verbeelding die visuele beelden schept, geschreven door de filosoof Onno Zijlstra. Een belangrijke rol is in het boek weggelegd voor de achttiende-eeuwse filosoof Immanuel Kant en zijn denken over verbeelding. Met dit boek wil Onno Zijlstra ons verleiden tot kijken, opnieuw kijken en nog eens kijken.
