This book examines the complexities of the colonization of the territory that is now Brazil and its shaping of psychological knowledge and practice. It reveals the rich network of cultural practices that were formed through the appropriation of elements of Jesuit Catholicism and the blending with elements of the cultures of native, African and Lusitanian populations present in the territory, and how psychological concepts and practices emerged and circulated between the sixteenth and the late eighteenth centuries, long before the establishment of psychology as a modern science. The volume summarizes the research program developed by the author over 38 years of academic activity through which she contributed to expand the field of historical studies in psychology by investigating how psychological concepts and practices were produced in cultural and historical contexts different from the European and North American societies where scientific psychology developed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Psychological Knowledge and Practices in Brazilian Colonial Culture will be of interest not only to historians of psychology, but also to professional psychologists working with culturally diverse populations who seek to understand how psychological concepts and phenomena are shaped by culture. Met Internationaal ondernemen krijgen Nederlandstalige programma’s in het hoger onderwijs een Nederlandstalig boek waarin de basisbeginselen van het internationaal ondernemen worden uitgelicht. Het boek is inzetbaar voor verschillende hoger beroepsopleidingen waarin internationaal ondernemen, internationale handel, internationaal management en globalisering een onderdeel vormt van het curriculum. This book describes how civic dialogue can serve as an antidote to a polarized public square. It argues that when pervasive polarization renders rational and fact-based argumentation ineffective, we first need to engage in a way that builds trust. Civic dialogue is a form of structured discourse that utilizes first-person narratives in order to promote trust, openness, and mutual understanding. By creating a dialogic structure that encourages listening and reflection, particularities and differences about fraught identities can be expressed in such a way that leads to the possibility of connecting through our fundamental, shared, and deeply felt humanity. Drawing on Plato, Buber, Gadamer, Dewey, cognitive bias research, as well as the work of dialogue practitioners, Lauren Swayne Barthold provides a sustained defense of civic dialogue as an effective strategy for avoiding futile political arguments and for creating pluralistic democratic communities.

Maandag tolk je voor Tsjetsjenen die de oorlog zijn ontvlucht en hun gehandicapte zoontje willen inschrijven in het Bijzonder Onderwijs. Dinsdag wordt er je gevraagd om de asielprocedure uit te leggen aan Oeigoeren, afkomstig uit Kazakstan. Woensdag moet je aanwezig zijn tijdens een consultatie in een centrum voor moeder- en kindzorg waar een Litouws baby'tje wordt opgevolgd voor een hardnekkige vorm van eczema. Donderdag ben je voor een paar uur zoet in een ziekenhuis waar je van de ene dienst naar de andere rent om dokters en verplegend personeel bij te staan tijdens consultaties die kunnen gaan over slechtziendheid, verlamming na een val, gynaecologische problemen, oorontstekingen enzovoort voor Oekraïense, Armeense en Georgische patiënten. Vrijdag ben je thuis en tolk je telefonisch voor cliënten van overal en nergens waarbij je administratieve problemen 'bespreekbaar' maakt, voor huisartsen en therapeuten tolkt of vrouwen in vluchthuizen een stem geeft (...).
