Dada la voluntad de difusión y acción eficaz que hizo ostensible la religiosidad del Siglo de Oro, puede entenderse naturalmente su fascinación por los instrumentos audiovisuales de adoctrinamiento y la función óptica de la comprensión. El acto de ver o mirar una pintura devota no era simplemente algo que le sucedía a la obra después de su ejecución por parte del artista, sino que ésta había sido creada para portar un mensaje distintivo e impactar en la imaginación. Enfatizar precisamente esta función comunicativa del cuadro, que está más allá de la mera experiencia estética, es un modo de equiparar imagen y oratoria. De hecho, este libro confirma que la retórica puede ayudar a determinar hasta qué punto las ideas tomadas de la elocuencia sagrada influyeron sobre los modos de ver en la Alta Edad Moderna hispánica, y cómo la percepción visual del público condicionó la predicación contemporánea. Las conclusiones abren novedosas y enriquecedoras vías para la comprensión del arte y la cultura visual del Siglo de Oro, atestiguando, por un lado, una relación cierta entre los tratados españoles de pintura de la época y la oratoria clásica, y, por otro, afirmando la existencia de una teoría «española» de la imagen sagrada en los textos de predicación y espiritualidad de la época.

"This book presents a new approach to nineteenth-century Atlantic history by extending the analytical perspective of the second slavery to questions of empire, colonialism, and slavery. With a focus on Latin America, Brazil, the Spanish Caribbean, and the United States, international scholars examine relations among empires, between empires and colonies, and within colonies as parts of processes of global economic and political restructuring. By treating metropolis-colony relations within the framework of the modern world-economy, the contributors call attention to the political, economic, and cultural interdependence and interaction of global and local forces shaping the Atlantic world.
