Les textes réunis dans ce livre (provoqués par quelques films de quelques cinéastes à l'extrême pointe du contemporain : Nicolas Klotz et Elisabeth Perceval, Tariq Teguia, Nathalie Nambot et Maki Berchache, le groupe Boris Barnet, Ghassan Salhab, Pierre Creton), portent sur une série d'hypothèses cinématographiques nouées autour d'un terme au pluriel : communs. Ces films ne calquent pas leurs conduites sur un scénario sans bifurcations, un calcul, encore moins un programme dont ils feraient un exposé mécanique.Ils constituent plutôt une série de poussées, non sans désordre, de fugues, qui dessinent une sorte de fraternité humaine et artistique. Ce livre préfère les ouvertures, le pluriel des communs et des multiples formes de singularisations à la seule recherche de la singularité, aussi notable soit-elle. Cinémas en communs est animé par un peu plus que des hypothèses, un peu moins que des certitudes : un désir.De cinémas. De communs.

‘Mijn jongens zien surfen was het einde’. In deze aangrijpende en verbluffende graphic novel brengt surfer en illustrator AJ Dungo een eerbetoon aan zijn overleden partner en hun liefde voor golfsurfen, een liefde die overeind bleef in woelige tijden. Dungo schetst de schoonheid en de gelaagdheid van hun relatie wanneer ze, nadat er bij haar kanker is vastgesteld, samen de strijd aangaan met de ziekte. Zijn passie voor de golven staat centraal, maar Dungo doorspekt zijn eigen verhaal met de verhalen van de grote surfhelden in dit uniek en waargebeurd relaas dat fascineert en ontroert.

1899: Leopold II, koning der Belgen, stuurt expedities naar alle uithoeken van zijn persoonlijke kolonie in Midden Afrika. Joseph Lippens maakt deel uit van de expeditie die op zoek gaat naar zijn zieke vader, een respectabele ondernemer in ivoor die al geruime tijd niets meer van zich liet horen. Op de tocht door de binnenlanden van het Afrikaanse continent lijkt een mysterieuze kever zich in het oor van Lippens te nestelen. Hij wordt mentaal en fysiek tot het uiterste gedreven, en dreigt in de oneindigheid van het evenaarswoud ten onder te gaan aan de dwaasheid van de koloniale ambitie.

Around the year 1124, a community of Benedictines settled on the Wivina site at Groot-Bijgaarden in modern-day Belgium. Archaeological research has uncovered the remains of five consecutive churches and outbuildings there. The current chapel from 1924 is still intact. In 2011 interior architect Tom Callebaut led the transformation of this chapel into a contemporary space for contemplation. Nine years later, photographer Geert Goiris was invited to visualize the experience of this space, which is still a beacon of theology and reflection. A text by Herman Lombaerts accompanies the series of images.

The picturesque vistas and apparent stability of Switzerland have made it an elusive subject for contemporary photography. Over a five-year period (2014 - 2019), Cole found a distinctly new way to look at a country that has been the quintessence of tourist experience for almost two centuries. 'Fernweh' muses on the German word for a longing to be elsewhere. Cole's meditative and scrupulously composed work, made with colour film, is evocative of the hidden history of the Alpine nation as well as of its highly curated terrain. Returning to Switzerland year after year, Cole shares the patience and mild palette of luminaries of contemporary European photography but the constructivist tension in these images is all his own. With photographs shot in every corner of the country, from Vaud to Graubunden to Lugano, 'Fernweh' creates a vision of Switzerland that, though largely devoid of human presence, is rich in human traces; none more so than Cole's own distinct way of seeing.
