Abstract

La notion d'activité chimique en thermodynamique intéresse des chimistes et physiciens. Ce livre est un essai de synthèse de travaux théoriques pouvant permettre la compréhension de la signification physique profonde de la grandeur « activité ». Bien que ce concept soit manipulé depuis un siècle avec succès, sa signification en termes de grandeurs moléculaires reste bien mystérieuse à l'heure actuelle, y compris pour ses « praticiens ». Le livre comprend deux grandes parties et est suivi de quelques appendices. La première partie traite le concept d'activité en thermodynamique classique ; la deuxième partie concerne le concept d'activité considéré sous l'angle de la thermodynamique statistique. Des appendices, le plus souvent d'ordre mathématique, sont placés en fin de livre ; ils ont pour objet de raccourcir les développements généraux.

Abstract

Geo-spatial analysis has become an essential component of hydrological studies to process and examine geo-spatial data such as hydrological variables (e.g., precipitation and discharge) and basin characteristics (e.g., DEM and land use land cover). The advancement of the data acquisition technique helps accumulate geo-spatial data with more extensive spatial coverage than traditional in-situ observations. The development of geo-spatial analytic methods is beneficial for the processing and analysis of multi-source data in a more efficient and reliable way for a variety of research and practical issues in hydrology. This book is a collection of the articles of a published Special Issue Geo-Spatial Analysis in Hydrology in the journal ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information. The topics of the articles range from the improvement of geo-spatial analytic methods to the applications of geo-spatial analysis in emerging hydrological issues. The results of these articles show that traditional hydrological/hydraulic models coupled with geo-spatial techniques are a way to make streamflow simulations more efficient and reliable for flood-related decision making. Geo-spatial analysis based on more advanced methods and data is a reliable resolution to obtain high-resolution information for hydrological studies at fine spatial scale.

Abstract

One of the major outstanding questions about black holes is whether they remain stable when subject to small perturbations. An affirmative answer to this question would provide strong theoretical support for the physical reality of black holes. This book takes an important step toward solving the fundamental black hole stability problem in general relativity by establishing the stability of nonrotating black holes - or Schwarzschild spacetimes - under so-called polarized perturbations.

Abstract

The Special Issue entitled “Modeling of Soil Erosion and Sediment Transport” focuses on the mathematical modeling of soil erosion caused by rainfall and runoff at a basin scale, as well as on the sediment transport in the streams of the basin. In concrete terms, the quantification of these phenomena by means of mathematical modeling and field measurements has been studied. The following mathematical models (software) were used, amongst others: AnnAGNPS, SWAT, SWAT-Twn, TUSLE, WRF-Hydro-Sed, CORINE, LCM-MUSLE, EROSION-3D, HEC-RAS, SRC, WA-ANN. The Special Issue contains 14 articles that can be classified into the following five categories: Category A: “Soil erosion and sediment transport modeling in basins”; Category B: “Inclusion of soil erosion control measures in soil erosion models”; Category C: “Soil erosion and sediment transport modeling in view of reservoir sedimentation”; Category D: “Field measurements of gully erosion”; Category E: “Stream sediment transport modeling”. Most studies presented in the Special Issue were applied to different basins in Europe, America, and Asia, and are the result of the cooperation between universities and/or research centers in different countries and continents, which constitutes an optimistic fact for the international scientific communication.

Abstract

This book is a collection of all papers published in the Special Issue “Coastal Vulnerability and Mitigation Strategies: From Monitoring to Applied Research”. The main focus is to provide the state-of-the-art and recent research updates on sustainable management strategies for protecting vulnerable coastal areas. Based on 28 contributions from authors representing 17 different countries (Australia, China, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, UK, USA), an ensemble of interdisciplinary articles has been collected, emphasizing the importance of tackling technical and scientific problems at different scales and from different point of views.

Abstract

This book is a collection of all papers published in the Special Issue “Coastal Vulnerability and Mitigation Strategies: From Monitoring to Applied Research”. The main focus is to provide the state-of-the-art and recent research updates on sustainable management strategies for protecting vulnerable coastal areas. Based on 28 contributions from authors representing 17 different countries (Australia, China, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, UK, USA), an ensemble of interdisciplinary articles has been collected, emphasizing the importance of tackling technical and scientific problems at different scales and from different point of views.
