"Assembling the Architect explores the origins and history of architectural practice. It unravels the competing interests that historically have structured the field and cultivates a deeper understanding of the contemporary profession. Focusing on the period 1870 to 1920 when the foundations were being laid for the U.S. architectural profession that we recognize today, this study traces the formation and standardization of the fundamental relationships among architects, owners, and builders, as codified in the American Institute of Architects' very first Handbook of Architectural Practice . It reveals how these archetypal roles have always been fluid, each successfully redefining their own agency with respect to the others in the constantly-shifting political economy of building. Far from being a purely historical study, the book also sheds light on today's digitally-enabled profession. Contemporary architectural tools and disciplinary ideals continue to be shaped by the same fundamental tensions, and emergent modes of practice such as BIM (Building Information Modelling) and IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) represent the realization of programs and agendas that have been over a century in play. Essential reading for professional practice courses as a contextual and historical companion to the Handbook, Assembling the Architect provides a critical perspective of the profession that is fundamental to understanding current architectural practice."--

"Through a collection of 13 essays, Peggy Deamer examines the profession of architecture not as an abstraction, but as an assemblage of architectural workers. What forces prevent architects from empowering ourselves to be more relevant and better rewarded? How can these forces be set aside by new narratives, new organizations and new methods of production? How can we sit at the decision-making table to combat short-term real estate interests for longer term social and ethical value? How can we pull architecture - its conceptualization, its pedagogy, and its enactment - into the 21st century without succumbing to its neoliberal paradigm? In addressing these controversial questions, Architecture and Labor brings contemporary discourses on creative labor to architecture, a discipline devoid of labor consciousness. This book addresses how, not just what, architects produce and focuses not on the past but on the present. It is sympathetic to the particularly intimate way that architects approach their design work while contextualizing that work historically, institutionally, economically, and ideologically. Architecture and Labor is sure to be a compelling read for pre-professional students, academics, and practitioners"--

"Design-Build provides everything you need to know about how to embark on a design-build project within a studio or professional practice setting. Design-build models have increased across academic programs worldwide, allowing students to address the real-world challenges of working in the community using a participatory design process. In practice, they offer a full partnership between the designer and builder to elevate design concepts and reduce project costs. Written by an experienced practitioner and educator, this book offers contextual background on the development of the design-build model in pedagogy and practice, guidance from inception to conclusion for classroom and field usage, discussions on the shift to community-engaged design, and inspirational examples from international case studies. Illustrated in full colour throughout, it looks at structuring a design-build firm, best-practice, efficiency, and the limitations of design-build as a practice model. This is the fundamental guidebook for those interested in developing or working for a design-build professional practice, academics leading design-build programs and students interested in social and environmental justice, education and practice through a design-build model"

Ensamble’s track seems inseparable from trial. Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa have assembled their life and work as a sequence of material and mental essays that are interwoven to join experiment and experience, production and perspective, exploration and expression. Fusing construction and creation, they have brought together fields as distant as engineering and the arts, using the most advanced manufacturing techniques and the most archaic procedures to raise formally diverse yet intellectually connected works. After two decades, their journey has an unusual consistency, because there is a guiding thread of research, audacity, and risk that ties the granite megaliths of their Galician beginnings to the American Cyclopean House where they test a new way of building.

Just what is it that makes Heatherwick’s work so different, so appealing? I borrow the title from Richard Hamilton’s mythical collage to suggest answers. His work is so different and appealing because it understands architecture as experience, because it is based on material knowledge, and because it always has a poetic dimension. The first term inevitably addresses the pragmatic and holistic aesthetic of John Dewey, who in Art as Experience blurred the boundaries between high and low culture to define, with a radical democratic approach, the artistic as something that enhances life.

Sou Fujimoto describes his haphazard architectures as ‘notes without staves,’ and trying to interpret his forms through conventional composition is a futile effort. Escaping both the cartesian grid of regularity and the hierarchical pyramids of subordination, his pieces are scattered in space with a spontaneous order, evoking at once the processes of organic growth in nature and the mechanisms of adjustment in the social sphere. Reconciling the laws of biology laws with collective practices, this architecture disappears into the natural or urban landscape to crystallize suddenly in geometric jewels that extract their shine from the mist, and their poetic form from their functional indifference. Avoiding bold assertions, the works harvest a translucent fragility that is the base of their lyrical strength, and even the more solid projects are excavated or eroded to free the notes from the bars of the stave and the discipline of the metronome. Even though he is indeed a free verse in Japan’s architectural panorama, it is hard to imagine Fujimoto outside the social climate, the technical context, and the artistic scene of the country: a luminous, exact, and calm atmosphere where being in harmony with nature is inseparable from civic courtesy and the low-profile of affirmative individuality

The presentation of these eighteen works of the studio in this volume happens at a particularly important moment for b720. The exhibition of 2018 at the Aedes Gallery in Berlin meant reflecting on the last two decades of work since the foundation of the studio. Now most of the work gathered here belongs to that period of transition towards the incorporation as studio partners of close collaborators, some of them from the very beginning, and whose inconditional dedication and commitment to the goals of each project are inseparable from the work of all these years. It closes a period of transition and opens another that coincides with a time of uncertainty, but that finds us just as commited as always and ready to work, aware of our environment and our responsibility as architects, and decide how to act: be there little informaztion or a flood of it.
