In this dissertation, Paul Christensen examines the significant roles played by spirits in Cambodian society. In particular, he focuses on the handling of the traumatic past, the religious identification of Cambodians, the political empowerment of elites through spiritual legitimation strategies, and the living ritual practice of spirit mediums in Cambodia. Based on 13 months of ethnographic field research and an innovative methodology utilizing actor-network theory, the research provides an emic understanding of these religious phenomena in terms of a '(re-)enchanted modernity' that is manifesting itself across Southeast Asia. The dissertation makes a seminal contribution to the scholarly understanding of spirits. It is compelling not only because of the novel connections provided by its methodology; its ethnographic descriptions of social topics such as power, existence, religion, healing, love or mourning provide new insights into religious life in a rapidly changing country.

Ausgehend von der Frage nach der Relevanz von Geisterpraktiken untersucht Paul Christensen die bedeutsamen Rollen von Geistern in der kambodschanischen Gesellschaft. Die wichtigen thematischen Schwerpunkte legt er auf die Verarbeitung der traumatischen Vergangenheit, die religiöse Identifikation der Kambodschaner_innen, die politische Ermächtigung der Eliten durch spirituelle Legitimationsstrategien und die lebendige Ritualpraxis der Geistmedien in Kambodscha. Durch den ethnologischen Zugang einer 13-monatigen Feldforschung und eine innovative, an die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie angelehnte Methodik kann im Sinne einer (wieder-)'verzauberten Moderne' ein emisches Verständnis dieser religiösen Phänomene gewonnen werden, die in ähnlicher Weise in ganz Südostasien auftreten. Die Arbeit liefert einen wegweisenden Beitrag zum wissenschaftlichen Verständnis von Geistern.

This book provides insights into the practice of trance-based inquiry through arts-based research, serving as a beacon to guide the way to thresholds of ancient, yet novel, transmissions. Embedded in lived experience and theory, this book introduces the reader to the liminal space of place and trance-based inquiry processes entwined with creative artworkings. The interweaving of art, ritual, and trance-based inquiry opens sacred spaces for learning and unlearning that bring spirit into form. Each chapter presents examples from women artists and culminates with experiential practices drawn from the author’s decades of creative peregrinations to assist artists, teachers, and researchers in transmitting a conscious way of practicing and creating with trance. .
