Abstract

This book is a wide-ranging reference on current clinical and scientific knowledge regarding the various aspects of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH). Background information is first presented on the structural properties of hypomineralized enamel, the prevalence of MIH, and potential etiological factors. Subsequent chapters focus on key considerations in clinical practice. Diagnostic criteria, classifications, and treatment strategies are discussed and detailed attention is devoted to potential associations between MIH and caries, the occurrence of hypomineralized primary teeth, and the knowledge and experience of dentists concerning MIH. In the last part of the book, the different treatment options are systematically presented and reviewed, covering pain control, prophylaxis and desensitization, fissure sealing, direct and indirect restorations, and extraction therapy. The cost-effectiveness of the available procedures is also considered. The book is written by acknowledged international experts in the field and will be an ideal source of up-to-date information and guidance for both dental professionals and postgraduate students.

Abstract

This book is a wide-ranging guide to risk assessment and risk-based prevention in oral health and dentistry. Readers will find clear explanation of the principles, models, and tools of risk assessment, as well as practical information on risk assessment in relation to periodontal disease, caries, tooth wear, and oral cancer. The lessons that the oral healthcare profession can learn from experiences regarding risk assessment in primary medical care practice, particularly in cardiovascular and diabetes medicine, are highlighted. The closing section focuses specifically on implementation of risk assessment within the dental practice, including training of the oral healthcare team and the need to take into account medicolegal considerations. The book is a very timely addition to the literature, given the move towards wellness- rather than repair-based models of healthcare in Europe and North America and the focus of dental contracts on risk-driven care pathways. It will be of high value for not only practitioners but also professionals in healthcare funding bodies.

Abstract

Introduction and purpose of the study. - Patients care in the operating room must always be more efficient at all levels. This project aims at establishing a clinical route allowing the standardisation of the practices and the improvement of their effectiveness.Material and methodologies. - Two methods have been used for the data collection. As a first step, the different stages of the management of patients hospitalised in surgical day hospital for a wisdom teeth extraction carried out under general anaesthetic in the operating room has been detailed through direct observation. In a second phase, internal and external experts (maxillofacial surgeons, operating room nurses and anaesthetists) have answered several rows of survey following the Delphi method.Results. - A consensus has been obtained and a clinical route considered as standardised has been established. A study proposal on its evaluation would be interesting.Conclusions. - This methodology is successful and can be applied to other more complex surgical procedures.

Abstract

This book is a clinical guide to the prevention and management of traumatic dental injuries, including crown and root fractures and luxation injuries, in children of all ages. Readers will find clear descriptions of the challenges posed by the pediatric population, the evaluation of injuries, diagnosis, management, and follow-up. Whenever available, evidence-based guidelines are used to inform clinicians of the most appropriate care for each type of injury. A holistic approach is adopted, taking into account the child's developmental stage and ability to tolerate the proposed treatment. When indicated, more advanced forms of behavior guidance are discussed to enable the delivery of safe and effective care that will allow the best outcome to be achieved. Often, traumatic dental injuries result in sequelae that compromise the health of the developing permanent teeth. These sequelae and appropriate treatment options are described along with innovative approaches designed to preserve bone and maximize future treatment possibilities. The book will be a valuable asset for both pediatric and general dentists.
