Abstract

The diversity crisis in paleontology refers not to modern biota or the fossil record, but rather how our discipline lacks significant representation of individuals varying in race, ethnicity, and other aspects of identity. This Element is a call to action for broadening participation through improved classroom approaches as described in four sections. First, a brief review of the crisis and key concepts are presented. Next, culturally responsive pedagogy and related practices are introduced. Third, specific applications are offered for drawing cultural connections to studying the fossil record. Finally, recommendations including self-reflection are provided for fostering your own cultural competency. Our discipline offers much for understanding earth history and contributing new knowledge to a world impacted by humans. However, we must first more effectively welcome, support, and inspire all students to embrace meaning and value in paleontology; it is critical for securing the future of our field.

Abstract

This book demonstrates that since the 1970s, British feminist cartoons and comics have played an important part in the Women’s Movement in Britain. A key component of this has been humour. This aspect of feminist history in Britain has not previously been documented. The book questions why and how British feminists have used humour in comics form to present serious political messages. It also interrogates what the implications have been for the development of feminist cartoons and for the popularisation of feminism in Britain. The work responds to recent North American feminist comics scholarship that concentrates on North American autobiographical comics of trauma by women. This book highlights the relevance of humour and provides a comparative British perspective.The time frame is 1970 to 2019, chosen as representative of a significant historical period for the development of feminist cartoon and comics activity and of feminist theory and practice. Research methods include archival data collection, complemented by interviews with selected cartoonists. Visual and textual analysis of specific examples draws on literature from humour theory, comics studies and feminist theory. Examples are also considered as responses to the economic, social and political contexts in which they were produced.

A obra Letramento Estético na EJA e na Educação do Campo, originada a partir de um estudo de doutoramento realizado no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação, da Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências da UNESP, câmpus de Marília, estado de São Paulo, apresenta um experimento didático-formativo desenvolvido com jovens e adultos camponeses. Baseada na teoria Histórico-Cultural, esta pesquisa revela que o termo letramento aponta para um conjunto de práticas sociais no contexto da cultura escrita nos quais os sujeitos podem se engajar. Na compreensão do autor, o letramento estético é um bem cultural a que crianças, jovens e adultos têm inalienável direito, e a escola e a universidade têm o dever de atentar para o desenvolvimento de uma proposta didática voltada à aproximação do leitor com o texto. Diante disso, considera-se que não se pode mais adiar a perspectiva da ciência em geral, da arte e da cultura como componentes de letramento com jovens e adultos. O autor destaca também a importância do letramento estético para a tomada de consciência acerca da realidade na qual o sujeito se insere e para a compreensão do papel da atividade criadora para a constituição da personalidade humana. A rigor, este estudo traz consequências para a organização do trabalho de produção de textos na Educação do Campo, em particular, e na educação em geral. Portanto, esperamos que esta obra possa ampliar estudos e debates acerca da educação do campo, artes, novos estudos de letramento e Educação de Jovens e Adultos, bem como na formação de educadores e educadoras para o meio rural. Desejamos boas leituras a todos e a todas!
