Abstract

--provided by publisher 'As a "little Biblia" (Luther) the Psalter plays a prominent role in Judaism and Christianity. In the Qur'an, too, David is appreciated very much, and the psalms resonate in the background of many suras. What potential can evolve from the psalms in a trialogue of the Abrahamic religions? What does it imply when, in praying the psalms, God becomes the unifying factor of the peoples and Jerusalem becomes the place of the utopia of a never-ending peace? The 22 contributions on the psalms in memory of the outstanding psalm researcher Erich Zenger pursue this question.' --provided by publisher

Abstract

Abstract

This book is the first large-scale study of the 'Metaphrasis Psalmorum' since the middle of the twentieth century. It provides a revised critical text and complete modern translation of the poem, as well as an extensive introduction, which explores in detail critical questions such as authorship and the poet's engagement with early Christian exegesis. On the basis of a thorough re-examination of the poem's theology, its relationship to other late antique poetry, and relevant external evidence, it is argued, contrary to received opinion, that the 'Metaphrasis Psalmorum' is a genuine work of Apollinaris of Laodicea, the influential if controversial bishop of the 4th century. It is also demonstrated that the poet interacts in a more wide-reaching and intentional way with early Christian exegesis on the Psalms than has previously been recognized, including the exegesis of Origen's newly discovered Homilies on the Psalms. The introduction includes broader discussion of the tradition of early Christian classicizing poetry, the poet's engagement with the Hellenic tradition, and his paraphrastic technique. The revised text and translation make more accessible a poorly known and understudied poem, which is nevertheless a major and important poetic work of late antiquity. The book aims to promote greater awareness of the 'Metaphrasis Psalmorum' and act as a catalyst for future work on the paraphrase.

Abstract

The problem of Psalm 68:19 (Masoretic Text) in Ephesians 4:8 has a rich history of interpretation; particular focus has been placed on Jewish and Pauline interpretations of the psalm, and the Jewish exegetical tradition that reads Moses as the one who ascends Mount Sinai to receive and give the law. Todd Scacewater suggests a second tradition, henceforth unnoticed, that interprets Psalm 68 eschatologically. While both traditions are significant, Scacewater maintains that the eschatological tradition provides a better matrix through which to understand Paul's use of the psalm.

Abstract

In 2012 a previously unknown manuscript, containing 3rd-century writings, was discovered in a Munich library. Named Codex Monacensis Graecus 314, it contains 29 homilies in their original language, which is ancient Greek. Most of them had been previously unknown altogether, and a few had been known only in a subsequent Latin translation. Their author is the 3rd-century Christian theologian Origen (native of Alexandria, Egypt; died in Caesarea, Palestine). This book is the first English translation of these Greek homilies. In the homilies Origen provides interpretations of Psalms (of the Bible) -- interpretations that employ concepts of classical Greek theology and a three-level method of biblical interpretation (literal, moral, allegorical). He addresses questions about the goal of the Christian life, the church, the incarnation of Christ, and human nature.

Abstract

Hallur Mortensen examines the concept of God in Mark's Gospel, with particular emphasis on the baptismal scene of 1:9–11. This he closely relates to the beginning and end of the prologue (1:2–3 and 1:14–15) concerning the coming of the Lord, the gospel, and the kingdom of God. The allusions of the divine voice to Psalm 2 and Isaiah 42 reveal the function and identity of Jesus as the Son of God and thus also of God as the father of Jesus. The identity and descent of the Spirit at the baptism as an anointing is discussed in detail, and has a critical function in the coming of the kingdom and the defeat of Satan. These aspects are examined in the context of Jewish monotheism and what Hans W. Frei calls the »intention-action description« of identity – that 'being' is constituted by 'action' – and Mortensen thus argues that Mark's Gospel portrays a proto- and narrative trinitarian conception of God.
