Gesangbücher gehören zu den am meisten verbreiteten religiösen Schriften seit der frühen Neuzeit, dennoch ist ihre Bilderwelt bislang nur punktuell Gegenstand der Forschung geworden.0Wissenschaftler aus den Bereichen Kunstgeschichte, Hymnologie, Theologie, Kirchengeschichte, Kulturwissenschaft sowie Philologie diskutieren in diesem Band u. a. folgende Fragen: Wie wirkt sich die konfessionelle Situation einer Stadt auf die Produktion von Gesangbüchern aus? Welche Motive und Metaphern gibt es in katholischen und evangelischen Gesangbüchern, und wie verändert sich diese Ikonographie im Laufe der Zeit? Wie und durch wen wurden die Bücher im Gottesdienst und im Rahmen der privaten Frömmigkeit gebraucht. Schlie�lich wird exemplarisch auch die Wirkungsgeschichte bestimmter Motive in anderen Medien untersucht.

"With the birth of a serial press in the seventeenth century, the introduction of paid advertising was the most crucial step in pointing the newspaper industry towards a sustainable future. Here, as in so much else, the laboratory of invention was the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. In this study, based on an exhaustive examination of the first 6,000 advertisements placed in Dutch newspapers between 1620 and 1675, Arthur der Weduwen and Andrew Pettegree chart the growth of advertising from an adjunct to the book industry, advertising newly published titles, to a broad reflection of a burgeoning consumer society. Businesses and private citizens used the newspapers to offer a wide range of goods and services, publicise new inventions, or appeal for help in recovering lost and stolen goods, pets or children. In these evocative, colourful and sometimes deeply moving notices, we see the beginnings of marketing strategies that would characterise the advertising world over the following centuries, and into the modern era".

La notion d'italianisme est, depuis plus d'un siècle, une étiquette prête à l'emploi sous laquelle la critique a voulu rassembler les phénomènes les plus divers, relevant aussi bien des arts que des lettres, des modèles politiques et des pratiques sociales, ou encore des savoirs philosophiques, scientifiques et techniques. A literary scholar explains how eighteenth-century novels were manufactured, sold, bought, owned, collected, and read alongside Protestant religious texts. As the novel developed into a mature genre, it had to distinguish itself from these similar-looking books and become what we now call "literature." Literary scholars have explained the rise of the Anglophone novel using a range of tools, from Ian Watt's theories to James Watt's inventions. Contrary to established narratives, When Novels Were Books reveals that the genre beloved of so many readers today was not born secular, national, middle-class, or female. For the first three centuries of their history, novels came into readers' hands primarily as printed sheets ordered into a codex bound along one edge between boards or paper wrappers. Consequently, they shared some formal features of other codices, such as almanacs and Protestant religious books produced by the same printers. Novels are often mistakenly credited for developing a formal feature ("character") that was in fact incubated in religious books. The novel did not emerge all at once: it had to differentiate itself from the goods with which it was in competition. Though it was written for sequential reading, the early novel's main technology for dissemination was the codex, a platform designed for random access. This peculiar circumstance led to the genre's insistence on continuous, cover-to-cover reading even as the "media platform" it used encouraged readers to dip in and out at will and read discontinuously. Jordan Alexander Stein traces this tangled history, showing how the physical format of the book shaped the stories that were fit to print.

Le présent volume constitue les Actes du LXIe colloque international d'Études Humanistes, organisé à Tours du 2 au 5 juillet 2018 au Centre d'études supérieures de la Renaissance (CESR). Il s'ouvre sur un Hommage à Christophe Plantin, célèbre imprimeur de la Renaissance né dans la région de Tours dont notre groupe de recherche et cette collection portent le nom. Dans la lignée des travaux sur le transfert des savoirs qui s'est accompli de l'Antiquité à la Renaissance, le livre s'interroge sur la façon dont les femmes illustres de l'Antiquité grecque ont été perçues et réinterprétées du XIVe siècle à la fin du XVIe siècle. Divisé en quatre chapitres, l'ouvrage s'organise autour de quatre questions : quel a été le rôle de Boccace dans l'intérêt porté aux femmes grecques antiques ? Dans quelle mesure les figures mythologiques et les constructions allégoriques ont-elles été un instrument de moralisation et de christianisation de l'héritage païen ? Comment les grandes figures poétiques comme Sappho et les personnages issus des tragédies et romans grecs ont-ils été accueillis et transformés à la Renaissance ? En quoi ces femmes grecques antiques entrent-elles en résonance avec les réflexions menées à la même époque sur le rôle et la place de la femme dans la société ? Dans une perspective résolument transversale, cet ouvrage associe analyses philologiques et littéraires, études iconographiques, recherches historiques et philosophiques.
