The purpose of this guideline is to ensure the best antibiotic management of suspected or confirmed bacterial pneumonia in adults in hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes people presenting to hospital with moderate to severe community-acquired pneumonia and people who develop pneumonia while in hospital. It will enable services to make the best use of NHS resources. Where the new recommendations cover existing recommendations in the NICE guidelines on pneumonia (community-acquired): antimicrobial prescribing and pneumonia (hospital-acquired): antimicrobial prescribing follow the recommendations in the rapid guideline during the pandemic. This guideline focuses on what you need to stop or start doing during the pandemic. Follow the usual professional guidelines, standards and laws (including those on equalities, safeguarding, communication and mental capacity), as described in making decisions using NICE guidelines.

We have withdrawn our guideline on diagnosing and managing pneumonia in adults until further notice. This book offers an essential overview of aspiration pneumonia, and focuses on four major aspects: epidemiology, pathophysiology, new preventive strategies, and trending topics. Each part presents detailed findings and insights into critical issues for the treatment of the disease including its diagnosis, assessment, selecting antibiotics, similarities and differences between aspiration risk and aspiration pneumonia risk, different therapeutic approaches and so on. The book also discusses emerging topics concerning the definition of NHCAP and sleep apnea. Special attention is given to therapeutic and preventive approaches for the elderly, highlighting recent advances and the evidence on their positive outcomes. Since the patients with this disorder are often in a post-stroke state and elderly, the book is highly relevant for neurologists and geriatric physicians. Further, many surgeons also face this type of pneumonia in association with postoperative complications and cancer therapy related complications. Lastly, the definition of aspiration pneumonia and its therapeutic strategy have yet to be established in many countries, and the data presented here should serve as a guideline for its future diagnosis and treatment. Fangcang (方 舱 en chinois simplifié ; 方 艙 en chinois traditionnel ou fāngcāng en pinyin) signifie "cabine carrée" : ce mot chinois évoque une structure de construction modulaire mobile formée en utilisant une combinaison de divers matériaux solides. Il est emprunté au vocabulaire militaire qui l’utilise pour désigner l’hôpital de campagne. Phonétiquement, il est proche de celui qui désigne en Chinois l'arche de Noé (métaphore utilisée par les médias chinois). Outside back cover : "A novel public health concept, the Fangcang Shelter Hospital was first proposed by Professor Wang Chen, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, in Wuhan, China, in February 2020. While responding to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, medical staff faced the pressing situation of limited medical supplies, which led Professor Wang Chen to the suggestion of converting large-scale public venues such as exhibition centers and indoor stadiums into shelter hospitals to receive large number of patients, as this involved minimum time and monetary costs. The five essential functions of Fangcang Shelter Hospitals (isolation, triage, provision of basic medical care, frequent monitoring and rapid referral, and essential living and social engagement) enable shelter hospitals to receive patients with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19, and have the greatest impact on isolating the source of infection and expanding the area's health-care capacity.Two of the first three Fangcang Shelter Hospitals set up in Wuhan were redeveloped by Zall Group Property from existing buildings, while Zall Foundation was responsible for the provision of essential medical supplies and logistical support to facilitate the running of these shelter hospitals. In total, the two shelter hospitals have been instrumental in diagnosing, treating and curing 3663 patients. Under the medical expertise and guidance of Professor Wang Chen, as well as inputs from Zall Foundation's crews who contributed to the design, renovation and operation of these shelter hospitals, this manual encompasses knowledge and experience distilled from the running of these Fangcang Shelter Hospitals. Covering five important aspects, namely the proposal, design, renovation, operation, and logistical support for shelter hospitals, this booklet aims to be a useful reference for other epidemic prevention and control efforts in regions around the world.
