"The abundance of images in our everyday lives- and the speed at which they are consumed seems to have left us unable to critique them. To rectify this situation, artists such as Daniel Richter and Artur Zmijewski have demonstrated that painting is brilliantly equipped to produce 'slow images' that enable, encourage and reward reflection. Here, Helen Westgeest attempts to understand how various forms of slow painting can be used as tools to interrogate the visual mediations we encounter daily. Painting was expected to disappear in the digital age, but through interactive painting performances and painting-like manipulated photographs and videos, Westgeest shows how photography, video and new media art have themselves developed the visual strategies that painting had already mastered. The fleeting nature of digital mass media appears to have unlocked a desire for more physically stable and enduring pictures, like paintings. Schilderen was voor de Gentse kunstenaar Jos Trotteyn (1910-2002) zijn manier om uitdrukking te geven aan een onuitputtelijke stroom van uiterst gevarieerde ideeën. Het kenmerkende palet van deze verborgen parel bevat een veelheid aan subtiele tinten, van Indisch geel en oker over karmijnrood en cyaanblauw tot sienna. Dit verfijnde gebruik van kleurenschakeringen staat in het teken van uiteenlopende thema's--van sobere natuurimpressies tot hallucinante droombeelden--zodat het onmogelijk is om Jos Trotteyn in één woord te beschrijven. Door middel van een ruime selectie geeft de samensteller van dit boek een representatief overzicht van het indrukwekkende oeuvre dat deze schilder heeft nagelaten. Eigentijdse getuigenissen en uitvoerige citaten plaatsen de schilderijen van Jos Trotteyn in hun context en bieden inzicht in de originaliteit van deze kunstenaar. De subtiele beeldtaal die hij ontwikkelde is zowel schatplichtig aan de Vlaamse Primitieven als aan het surrealisme. Het was er deze schilder niet om te doen één enkel genre te bestrijken en daarmee naam te maken. Jos Trotteyn creëerde daarentegen een eigenzinnige wereld waarin realiteit en verbeelding elkaar voortdurend raken en aanvullen.

Si en France, on est sensible aux couleurs vibrantes de la peinture de Hundertwasser, on ne prend pas en compte la contribution de son travail au renouveau de l'art de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. On ignore que ses travaux furent sous-tendus par de nombreux écrits polymorphes : poésie, correspondance, récit autobiographique, théories, méthodes, discours et manifestes qui théorisèrent son voyage au coeur du mouvement créateur. L'étude en trois volumes que propose Marie-Hélène Hérault-Bibault analyse le discours hundertwasserien et montre qu'il est tout à fait indissociable de l'ensemble des travaux de l'artiste. Ce premier volet, jetant des ponts entre les cadres historiques, artistiques et sociétaux, explore les contextes familiaux, sentimentaux et géohistoriques dans lesquels s'enracine la réflexion esthético-philosophique de Hundertwasser. -- Source : éditeur Dans ce troisième et dernier volet de son étude des écrits de Hundertwasser, Marie-Hélène Hérault-Bibault montre le cheminement qui amena la dynamique créative de l'artiste vers l'architecture et l'écologie. L'auteure analyse, notamment sous l'angle stylistique, la dense réflexion architecturale que Hundertwasser mena dans ses nombreux textes, manifestes, performances et interventions télévisuelles. Est mis en lumière que Hundertwasser anticipa les prises de conscience actuelles. En effet, l'artiste conceptualisa très tôt les relations à la nature, élément indispensable à la survie de l'humanité. Il apparaît encore que ces stratégies écologistes modélisèrent l'évolution sociétale qu'appelait de ses voeux ce « prophète aux pieds nus », à l'authentique « être au monde ». -- Source éditeur
