This book provides a synthetic overview of all evidence concerning the evolution of the morphology of the human pelvis, including comparative anatomy, clinical and experimental studies, and quantitative evolutionary models. By integrating these lines of research, this is the first book to bring all sources of evidence together to develop a coherent statement about the current state of the art in understanding pelvic evolution. Second, and related to this, the volume is the first detailed assessment of existing paradigms about the evolution of the pelvis, especially the obstetric dilemma. The authors argue that there are many 'dilemmas', but these must be approached using a testable methodology, rather than on the proviso of a single paradigm. The volume clearly contributes to greater scientific knowledge about human variation and evolution, and has implications for clinicians working within reproductive health. A thought-provoking read for students, researchers and professionals in the fields of biological anthropology, human evolutionary anthropology, paleoanthropology, bioarchaeology, biology, developmental biology and obstetrics.

This book provides comprehensive coverage of the anatomical and physiological aspects of complex colorectal and pelvic malformations. Also described are the surgical protocols for this specialized field within pediatric surgery. The benefits of high- level collaboration between surgical services when treating these anomalies are explained, as are treatment algorithms and care of complications. Includes evaluation and management of the newborn Describes surgical interventions of the newborn, and when a primary repair versus a staged approach is required Explains the value of laparoscopy and deciding in which cases to use it Looks at the importance of a transition program to adulthood Pediatric surgeons worldwide and the teams in which they work will benefit from this well illustrated and comprehensive work

Gynaecological surgery has made tremendous strides in the last 30 years, due to advances in medical imaging, operative laparoscopy, and new types of prosthesis. Reconstructive plastic surgery of pelvic organ prolapse and of urinary incontinence have benefited from these developments. The laparoscopic sacropopexy and laparoscopic lateral suspension with meshes are two excellent examples. In order to successfully perform these operations, detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the pelvic floor as “seen from above”, i.e., from the abdominal view, is an invaluable asset. Achieving perfect knowledge of the anatomical details is now possible, thanks to laparoscopy. With the aid of laparoscopy, following subperitoneal dissections, reconstructive surgery of the pelvic floor can be made substantially more precise, more exact, and also more anatomical. This atlas will allow gynaecologic surgeons to deepen and improve their anatomical expertise, with the aid of laparoscopy. It also describes in detail the most common laparoscopic operative techniques. The book represents a new and unique approach to anatomy studied in the living, and supplements the main content with a wealth of straightforward and clearly explained photographs.

This book provides a detailed review of neurogenic pelvic dysfunctions following a suprapontine lesion, since a clear understanding of the pathogenesis of vesical and bowel dysfunctions has become increasingly important in medical education. It covers both urinary incontinence and retention, constipation and faecal incontinence resulting from ischemic, haemorrhagic and traumatic brain injury and Parkinson’s disease. It also offers a concise yet comprehensive summary of the neurologic examination of the pelvis: all chapters include the most up-to-date scientific and clinical information with the relevant level of clinical evidence. The book is divided into three sections, which integrate basic science with clinical medicine. The first section features a general introduction and essential background into micturition and bowel neural control, focusing on cortical control. Section 2 is devoted to common clinical problems regarding the neurologic assessment of the perineum, while the last section summarises urological and bowel dysfunction in suprapontine lesions. Providing a clear, concise and informative introduction to urology, it is a practical guide for professionals, medical students and residents in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Urology and Neurology.

Adolescent endometriosis is a previously overlooked disease in children, the true prevalence of which is still unknown but has been estimated between 19-73%. There are numerous initial challenges faced by adolescents suffering from delayed or undiagnosed endometriosis apart from experiencing chronic pain, such as: school/work absenteeism, false diagnoses/treatments, erroneous physician referrals, unnecessary radiological studies, radiation exposure, and emergency room visits as well as early exposure to narcotic pain medications and subsequent drug tolerance, resistance or even addiction. This text presents a clear history of physician and patient understanding and awareness of endometriosis in adolescents. It lays the groundwork for this condition with background information on endometriosis in general followed by a more focused look at endometriosis in adolescents. Leading experts in the field provide chapters on the different locations where endometriotic lesions can present in adolescents as well as identified risk factors and concomitant diseases of which it is important to be aware. In addition to the clinical presentation, this book also provides information on breaking down existing barriers, such as stigma, and current activism and awareness of this condition. Adolescent Endometriosis is a first-of-its-kind text that focuses exclusively on endometriosis in the adolescent population. Written by experts in the field, this book is a comprehensive resource for clinicians in all medical disciplines that treat adolescent age girls. .

This book introduces the current state of surgical treatment in this particular location-sacrum and pelvis, presenting progress and innovation, describing in detail the related procedures. The book comprises three main parts, pelvic, sacral and typical cases. In each part, chapters are organized in a parallel fashion, with general considerations, surgical approaches and commonly used procedures. This helps to illustrate and detail the surgical techniques involved. This book is valuable for surgeons dealing with this challenging disease. Additionally, it summarizes and reinforces the previous knowledge of techniques in this field.

The emotional and social components of teaching medical students to be good doctorsThe pelvic exam is considered a fundamental procedure for medical students to learn; it is also often the one of the first times where medical students are required to touch a real human being in a professional manner. In Feeling Medicine, Kelly Underman gives us a look inside these gynecological teaching programs, showing how they embody the tension between scientific thought and human emotion in medical education. Drawing on interviews with medical students, faculty, and the people who use their own bodies to teach this exam, Underman offers the first in-depth examination of this essential, but seldom discussed, aspect of medical education. Through studying, teaching, and learning about the pelvic exam, she contrasts the technical and emotional dimensions of learning to be a physician. Ultimately, Feeling Medicine explores what it means to be a good doctor in the twenty-first century, particularly in an era of corporatized healthcare.
