"An authoritative, multidisciplinary introduction to this complex and contested concept"-- Humans rank with the powerful forces of nature transforming Earth. Since the mid-20th century, population growth, industrialization, and globalization have had such deep and wide-ranging impacts that our planet no longer functions as it did during the previous eleven millennia. So distinctive is this collective human intervention that a new geological interval has been proposed; it is called the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is intriguing scientifically, fascinating intellectually, and deeply disturbing politically, socially, economically, and ethically. We must learn how to co-exist sustainably with the rest of nature in what is emerging as a new planetary state. To do so, we must first understand what "Anthropocene" means in all its dimensions. This book adopts a multidisciplinary approach, starting with an exploration of the Anthropocene as a geological concept: ranging across the physical changes to the landscape, to the rapidly heating climate, to a biosphere undergoing transformation. And what of the "anthropos" in the Anthropocene ? While geoscience does not normally address political and ethical issues of justice and equity, or economics and culture, Anthropocene studies in the humanities and social sciences investigate the complexities of the human activity driving global change. Here the book looks at human history, both in the deep past and more recently, the politics and economics of growth spurring the Anthropocene, and potential ways of mitigating its cruel effects. Our fragile, still beautiful, planet is finite. The new realities of the Anthropocene will need our best efforts, across disciplinary divides, at effective hope and action

Si les changements environnementaux liés à l’humanité ne font aucun doute, leur ampleur et leurs conséquences ne sont pas si faciles à évaluer. Pour le savant, il s’agit d’établir les liens de causalité et les impacts avec le plus de précision possible, puis de poser un diagnostic. Le présent dictionnaire s’appuie sur le concept récent d’« anthropocène », qui a le mérite, qu’on l’approuve ou non, de relancer la réflexion sur les rapports entre nature et société, entre constat scientifique et action politique, à travers une approche spatiale et territoriale. Procédant de façon critique, et fruit d’une démarche collective, cette vaste entreprise éditoriale se fonde sur une pratique de terrain, attentive aux détails et méfiante à l’égard des discours pré-établis. Parmi les 330 notices, plusieurs thèmes sont au cœur des débats contemporains (biodiversité, changement climatique…), d’autres se réfèrent à des courants de pensée (écoféminisme, transhumanisme…). Les concepts mobilisés abordent des questions politiques (capitalocène, justice environnementale…), philosophiques (catastrophes, Gaïa…), ou épistémologiques (finitude, population…). Des notions classiques sont réinterrogées (nature, ressource…), tandis que des concepts sont précisés (biosphère, écosystème…). D’autres notices discutent de mécanismes environnementaux (érosion, tsunami…), de pratiques récentes (agroécologie, ville durable…), de phénomènes territorialisés (déforestation, désertification…) ou d’artefacts (aéroport, autoroute…). Certaines examinent des lieux emblématiques (Amazonie, Fukushima…). D’autres, enfin, offrent un regard original sur l’anthropocène, sa faune (chien, ours…), ses mutations socio-économiques, institutionnelles ou politiques (biopiraterie, ZAD…). "L'histoire débute à la fin du XIXe siècle. Persuadés d'avoir retrouvé en Afrique la nature disparue en Europe, les colons créent les premiers parcs naturels du continent, du Congo jusqu'en Afrique du Sud. Puis, au lendemain des années 1960, les anciens administrateurs coloniaux se reconvertissent en experts internationaux. Il faudrait sauver l'Eden ! Mais cette Afrique n'existe pas. Il n'y a pas de vastes territoires vierges de présence humaine, et arpentés seulement par ces hordes d'animaux sauvages qui font le bonheur des safaris touristiques. Il y a des peuples, qui circulent depuis des millénaires, ont fait souche, sont devenus éleveurs ici ou cultivateurs là. Pourtant, ces hommes, ces femmes et enfants seront - et sont encore - expulsés par milliers des parcs naturels africains, où ils subissent aujourd'hui la violence quotidienne des éco-gardes soutenus par l'Unesco, le WWF et tant d'autres ONG. The alarm bells ringing about biodiversity loss are growing louder, and the possibility of mass extinction is real. Anthropocentric property is a key driver of biodiversity loss, a silent killer of species worldwide. If excluding animals from a legal right to own land is causing their destruction, extending the legal right to own property to wildlife may prove its salvation.
