Abstract

Hybrid buildings are urban artefacts which are often characterised by the mix of uses. They share a hazardous life, full of obstacles and setbacks. Those who manage to be built and endure are true survivors of a rare and vigorous category that grows in places of opportunity, making its way through the speculative weeds. in this catalogue on the Art of Mixing Uses, a+t research group rescues 50 Hybrid Buildings designed from the 19th century to the present. Each of them is drawn in section, with its function in sight, and tells us a stimulating story. 50 Hybrid buildings is a catalogue of types without typology, tough guys who insist on mixing uses and users, guys who like the complexity and indeterminacy and support neither purity nor segregation.

Abstract

Abstract

Hybrid buildings are urban artefacts which are often characterised by their mixed-use role in the city. The ones that manage to get built and endure are true survivors of a rare and vigorous category that flourishes in locations of opportunity. This volume presents 50 of these hybrid buildings, designed from the 19th century to the present, as a catalogue of types without any specific typology. Each project is drawn in section, revealing both its functions and a fascinating narrative about how it came to be, as well as its place in the urban context. The publication demonstrates how buildings which insist on mixing uses and users can more naturally incorporate complexity and indeterminacy.

Abstract

Peter Heisterkamp , whose artist's name goes back to the mafioso Frank 'Blinky' Palermo, is known for his large fabric and metal pictures as well as his objects and installations. Less well known, yet no less interesting, are the works he created in editions: screen prints and offset prints, lithographs, objects, and a template for painting. In their entirety, these works not only reflect Palermo's development from the 1960s to his early death in 1977, but also show how the artist deliberately expanded his work with the possibilities of technical reproduction. Thanks to a donation from the Cologne collector Ulrich Reininghaus, in 2018 a complete set of Palermo's editions became part of the Museum Ludwig's collection. After having been subject to an in-depth scholarly research, they will now be presented in an exhibition for the 1rst time. The exhibition catalogue also includes an updated version of Fred Jahn's out-of-print catalogue raisonné from 1983.00Texts by: Yilmaz Dziewior, Julia Friedrich, Susanne Küper, Fred Jahn00Exhibition: Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (18.01. - 05.03.2020).

Abstract

In 1959 Daniel Spoerri pioneered the first programmatic series of multiples―three-dimensional objects issued in edition―to be broadly distributed. With a radical emphasis on multiplication and movement, Edition MAT (Multiplication d’art transformable) presented an international selection of work by key figures in postwar kinetic and Op art. Multiplied is the first in-depth English-language study of this seminal project in the history of postwar art. The catalog presents the entirety of the three collections—1959, 1964, and 1965—consisting of 48 artworks by 35 European and US artists associated with kinetic and Op art, including such leading figures as Marcel Duchamp, Dieter Roth, and Jean Tinguely, alongside lesser known artists. With four essays, artist entries, and an appendix of newly translated historical texts, this volume sheds light on under-studied artworks as well as the body of critical thought connecting art, commerce, and display in the postwar period. Artists: Yaacov Agam, Josef Albers, Arman, Jean Arp, Enrico Baj, Davide Boriani, George Brecht, Pol Bury, Christo, Gabriele De Vecchi, Marcel Duchamp, Bo Ek, Robert Filliou, Karl Gerstner, Maurice Henry, Julio Le Parc, Roy Lichtenstein, Heinz Mack, Frank J. Malina, Enzo Mari, Christian Megert, François Morellet, Bruno Munari, Arnulf Rainer, Man Ray, Dieter Roth, Jesús Rafael Soto, Daniel Spoerri, Paul Talman, André Thomkins, Jean Tinguely, Victor Vasarely, Jacques Villeglé, Emmett Williams
