Abstract

"Questions about Language sets out to answer, in a readable yet insightful format, a series of vital questions about language, some of which language specialists are regularly asked, and some of which are so surprising that only the specialists think about them. With an introduction by the editors, in this handy guide, sixteen experts in the field answer some challenging questions about language from, What makes a language a language? to Do people swear because they don't know enough words? Illustrating the complexity of human language, and the way in which we use it, the twelve chapters each end with a section on further reading for anyone interested in following up on the topic. Covering core questions about language, this is essential reading for both students new to language and linguistics and the interested general reader"--

Abstract

The papers in this volume concern different linguistic categories from a variety of perspectives. The first and second papers by Janusz Badio deal with evaluation in EFL written stories and the linguistic coding of events in agreement with their variable salience in conceptualisation. The chapter by Alan Cienki analyses gesture units to draw conclusions about language in general. Kamila Ciepiela looks at the category of identity as a product and process. Craig Callender presents a chapter on the perception and the nature of the phoneme followed by a chapter by Henryk Kardela, who discusses how meanings and forms are fused into single morphological units. Krzysztof Kosecki turns the readers' attention on the prototype of narrative and emotion in E. Hemingway's story Cat in the Rain and on the analysis of Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. Przemyslaw Krakowian's interesting article explains the role of Multi Facet Rash Analysis in tests of oral production. Ourania Papadima expertly overviews the very important categories of second language pedagogy, ESP and EAP. Jana Richterova provides an analysis of resource books for advanced learners of English. Nezrin Samedova-Hajiyeva's chapter centres on the grammatical category of aspect. Last, Jacek Walinski describes the categorization of directional verbs in English.

Abstract

This book shows how accessible communication, and especially easy-to-understand languages, should be designed in order to become instruments of inclusion. It examines two well-established easy-to-understand varieties: Easy Language and Plain Language, and shows that they have complementary profiles with respect to four central qualities: comprehensibility, perceptibility, acceptability and stigmatisation potential. The book introduces Easy and Plain Language and provides an outline of their linguistic, sociological and legal profiles: What is the current legal framework of Easy and Plain Language? What do the texts look like? Who are the users? Which other groups are involved in the production and use of Easy and Plain Language offers? Which qualities are a hazard to acceptability and, thus, enhance their stigmatisation potential? The book also proposes another easy-to-understand variety: Easy Language Plus. This variety balances the four qualities and is modelled in the present book.

Abstract

Abstract

This peer-reviewed textbook is designed for the true beginner with U.S. college students in mind. It contains themed chapters, which are divided into 8 sections. Each section has its own set of learning objectives, and is further separated into three types of assignments, Para estudiar en casa (with detailed explanations), Para practicar en casa (homework exercises), and Para practicar en clase (paired and group classwork activities). The explanations and primary input are written to be easily comprehensible. The individual exercises are geared towards acquisition of form and function, and the communicative classwork exercises promote interpersonal exchanges between students. The digital copy includes some embedded audio files, and we are developing a website to house many more resources.
