Workers’ Education in the Global South explores the historical development of radical workers’ education in South Africa as one particular strand within the broader tradition of radical adult education. Drawing on the theoretical resources of Activity Theory, Gramsci, Freire and others, it investigates the key features of workers’ education as a form of pedagogy with a unique history and logic of practice, and explores how it has been shaped by its location within labour and other social movements as well as its ‘southern’ location within the global political economy. Successive chapters explore its counter-hegemonic but contested purposes, its knowledge practices that seek to overcome the historical divide between intellectual and manual labour, and a pedagogy which often assumes didactic forms but which retains a democratic character through its embeddedness in working class experience. It illustrates the rich processes of experiential learning that happen through day-to-day organising, in workers’ cultural activity as well as through mass action. It argues that this tradition of workers’ education currently stands at a crossroads, as global neoliberal market policies and post-apartheid education and training policies threaten to undermine its radical social vision, and concludes by offering ideas on how this tradition of radical workers’ education might be renewed.

Two decades after Indonesia's transition to democracy, its labor movement has emerged as a vibrant and influential political actor. Labor and Politics in Indonesia provides the first in-depth analysis of this development, investigating how a structurally weak labor movement carved out a strategic foothold in a country with no recent history of union engagement in politics. Caraway and Ford show how Indonesia's labor movement achieved many of its goals first through the disruptive power of contentious politics and later by combining street and electoral politics. Labor and Politics in Indonesia challenges the dominant theoretical approaches in the study of Indonesian politics, demonstrating how this movement became an active, and surprisingly effective, participant in Indonesia's democracy. Caraway and Ford break new theoretical ground in their analysis of how legacies of authoritarianism, the post-transition political opportunity structure, and the tactical creativity of Indonesia's unions combined to propel Indonesia's labor movement to success.

Couvrant une vaste période, de la fin du xixe siècle à nos jours, l’ouvrage aborde la question de la culture ouvrière dans une perspective transnationale, interdisciplinaire et interculturelle en cohérence avec les questionnements actuels de l’historiographie : à l’heure du discours sur la mémoire du mouvement ouvrier, il en retrace l’évolution dans l’espace germanophone, en mettant en évidence des pratiques culturelles porteuses de progrès pour la classe ouvrière. La notion de culture ouvrière, prise au sens large du terme, est donc analysée dans ses implications historiques, politiques, sociologiques, linguistiques et artistiques. Plusieurs études font intervenir la dimension comparatiste avec une mise en perspective entre la Rhénanie du Nord-Westphalie et le Nord-Pas de Calais. La politique culturelle de la RDA, État des travailleurs et paysans, y occupe une place centrale, montrant les limites d’une culture ouvrière imposée et uniquement centrée sur la place de l’ouvrier dans l’appareil productif. Dans le contexte d’une culture de masse, la pérennité des notions de classe ouvrière, et donc de culture ouvrière, a pu être remise en cause, mais plusieurs auteurs évoquent aussi une culture qui intègre la dimension du travail, d’un travail aliénant ou précaire, mais aussi l’absence de travail, dans des domaines comme le théâtre, la littérature ou la lutte syndicale, avec notamment les questions d’intégration des immigrés et du multiculturalisme.

"A People's History of Classics explores the influence of the classical past on the lives of working-class people, whose voices have been almost completely excluded from previous histories of classical scholarship and pedagogy, in Britain and Ireland from the late 17th to the earlier 20th century. This volume challenges the prevailing scholarly and public assumption that the intimate link between the exclusive intellectual culture of British elites and the study of the ancient Greeks and Romans and their languages meant that working-class culture was a 'Classics-Free Zone'. Making use of diverse sources of information, both published and unpublished, in archives, museums and libraries across the United Kingdom and Ireland, Hall and Stead examine the working-class experience of classical culture from the Bill of Rights in 1689 to the outbreak of the Second World War. They analyse a huge volume of data, from individuals, groups, regions, and activities, in a huge range of sources including memoirs, autobiographies, Trade Union collections, poetry, factory archives, artefacts and documents in regional museums. This allows a deeper understanding not only of the many examples of interaction with the Classics, but also what these cultural interactions signified to the working poor: from the promise of social advancement, to propaganda exploited by the elites, to covert and overt class war. This book provides an analysis of the global working class on film and considers the ways in which working-class experience is represented in film around the world. The book argues that representation is important because it shapes the way people understand working-class experience and can either reinforce or challenge stereotypical depictions. Film can shape and shift discussions of class, and this book provides an interdisciplinary study of the ways in which working-class experience is portrayed through this medium. It analyses the impact of contemporary films such as Sorry To Bother You, This is England and Le Harve that focus on working class life. Attfield demonstrates that the global working class are characterised by diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality but that there are commonalities of experience despite geographical distance and cultural difference.
