Abstract

This book discusses carefully selected topics in Islamic banking and finance (IBF) in South Eastern Europe (SEE) as one of the fastest growing areas in global finance. IBF originated within various Islamic banks, Islamic windows, investment funds, Takaful companies, and other financial institutions and has resulted in various global products. Although it is still in an early phase in SEE, IBF has developed rapidly in the last decade and has created a need for research on related topics, from the fundamental principles of IBF to the SCR, endowments and investment instruments to Islamic banking practices. This is our second book published as a result of the Sarajevo Islamic and Finance conferences (SIFEC). This conference traditionally gathers Islamic banking, economics, and finance academicians, experts, and students all over the world who discuss a wide range of topics in this field, focusing on the SEE. Consisting of seven chapters presenting original research, this book is a valuable resource for researchers as well as for practitioners and potential investors in IBF, especially in SEE. Velid Efendic is an Associate Professor in the field of finance at the University of Sarajevo (UoS), Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was involved in the establishment and management of the Banking Academy and Center for Islamic Economics Banking and Finance at UoS, where he serves as the Head. Since 2013 he serves as the head of the international Joint degree MA programme “Islamic Banking” in collaboration between UoS and University of Bolton, UK. In 2017, Efendic was appointed as a Management Board member in the Banking Agency for supervision and regulation of banks in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) for the mandate of five years. He has been engaged as a consultant and researcher in many research and investment projects in a variety of public, private, and non-governmental, national, and international institutions and companies. For the last ten years, Efendic was the head, author, organizer, and lecturer at many practical/professional seminars and training courses in various fields of banking and Islamic banking and finance. He is one of the founders of the European Association for Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance.

Abstract

This book examines whether Islamic finance and Islamic economics is challenging the orthodoxy of the money markets. Can ethical finance combined with the prohibition on interest and speculation really work in the global economy? With a political economy approach, the book explores how the industry has grown in modern times – from a short-lived bank in an Egyptian city in the 1960s through to a global industry that is today valued at US$2.05 trillion. From the revelation as articulated by the Prophet Muhammed in the seventh century through to the gleaming 21st century skyscrapers of Dubai and Kuala Lumpur, the book covers the end of European colonialism, the controversial utterances of self-styled religious leaders, the impact of Islamophobia, and the efforts to end poverty through Islamic microfinance. The book uncovers an industry that is both profitable and changing the face of contemporary capitalism. James Simon Watkins is a Lecturer at Regent’s University London, UK. He was the Political Adviser at the Embassy of Japan in London and he has worked in the UK Houses of Parliament. He was the Chief Executive of a business group and was a UK Labour Party candidate for the 2014 European Parliament election. .

Abstract

This book aims to explore how Islamist parties mobilize debates, discourses, and environments in electoral authoritarian systems. Interrelating three theoretical schools, Electoral Authoritarianism Theory, Protest Voting Theory, and Political Process Theory, it adopts and expands on a demand-and-supply framework to approach the subject in a novel way, and adapts them to address North Africa, a region in which such theoretical scholarship has until now not been conducted. In-depth case studies focus on two Islamist parties in North Africa, Tunisia’s Ennahda and Algeria’s HMS, both of which adopted the Muslim Brotherhood model, had charismatic leaders, and were active in the political scene from 1989-2014, the period between their first electoral trial and their electoral participation after taking part in governance. The chapters proceed chronologically, providing a historical treatment of the evolution of Ennahda and the HMS since their inception and addressing their development in two and a half decades. Chuchu Zhang is an Associate Professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University, China. She received her PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Her research interests are in Middle Eastern politics, terrorism, and China-Middle East relations. .

Abstract

This book is an anthropological investigation into the different forms the economy assumes, and the different purposes it serves, when conceived from the perspective of Islamic micro-finance as a field of everyday practice. It is based on long-term ethnographic research in Java, Indonesia, with Islamic foundations active in managing zakat and other charitable funds, for purposes of poverty alleviation. The book explores the social foundations of contemporary Islamic practices that strive to encompass the economic within an expanded domain of divine worship and elucidates the effects such encompassment has on time, its fissure and synthesis. In order to elaborate on the question of time, the book looks beyond anthropology and Islamic studies, engaging attentively, critically and productively with the post-structuralist work of G. Deleuze, M. Foucault and J. Derrida, three of the most important figures of the temporal turn in contemporary philosophy.

Abstract

The main purpose of this report is to explore the role Islamic finance has played in furthering financial inclusion in Malaysia, with a view to drawing key lessons of experience. Given Malaysia's success in the development of Islamic finance, these lessons will be useful to policy makers and regulators in other Islamic finance jurisdictions as they make efforts to enhance Islamic financial inclusion. The study will also be relevant to development practitioners involved in providing technical assistance and advisory services to their client countries on different ways to foster financial inclusion and improve the contribution of the financial sector to growth and poverty reduction. The report is composed of five chapters: chapter one presents a macro-level assessment of key inclusion and Islamic finance indicators in Malaysia; chapter two analyses the country's regulatory structures on which inclusion has been based; chapter three identifies its institutional enablers; chapter four specifies prime consumer protection measures; and chapter five enunciates the impact that digitalization and Islamic financial technology (FinTech) have had in increasing inclusion.

Abstract

This book, the first of two volumes, highlights the concept of financial inclusion from the Islamic perspective. An important element of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), financial inclusion has been given significant prominence in reform and development agendas proposed by the United Nations and G-20. The significance of Islamic financial inclusion goes beyond improved access to finance to encompass enhanced access to savings and risk mitigation products, as well as social inclusion that allows individuals and companies to engage more actively in the real economy. It represents one of the important drivers of economic growth. Gender disparity exists within financial access and its extent varies widely across world economies. South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa have the largest gender gaps, with women in these regions being forty per cent less likely than men to have a formal account at a financial institution. Analysing how Islamic financial inclusion can empower individuals, this volume explores the contribution of Islamic microfinance in achieving SDGs and solving income and wealth inequality. Comprising a combination of empirical evidence, theory and modelling, this edited collection illustrates how to improve access to finance, making it essential reading for those researching both Islamic finance and development finance.

Abstract

This book is the second of two volumes that highlight the concept of financial inclusion from the Islamic perspective. An important element of the Sustainable Development Goals, financial inclusion has been given significant prominence in reform and development agendas proposed by the United Nations and G-20. The significance of Islamic financial inclusion goes beyond improved access to finance to encompass enhanced access to savings and risk mitigation products, as well as social inclusion that allows individuals and companies to engage more actively in the real economy. It represents one of the important drivers of economic growth. This volume explores the financial risks associated with lending to low-income groups due to high poverty levels and the lack of collateralization mechanisms. The first book on the market to provide empirical evidence of Islamic microfinance, deposit insurance and micro-entrepreneurship through the analysis of models and country case studies, this edited collection will be of value to those researching development finance, financial inclusion and Islamic finance.
