Comment les tragédies grecques, si lointaines, peuvent-elles continuer à nous émouvoir au fil de leurs métamorphoses ? Quels points communs entre l’écoute d’un public grec du Ve siècle avant notre ère, rassemblé au théâtre de Dionysos à Athènes. Et celle du spectateur d’aujourd’hui ou du simple lecteur qui s’invite à « l’intime gala pour soi » ? Telles sont les deux interrogations majeures qui fondent cette série d’essais et plaident pour la légitimité d’une lecture au présent des textes anciens.

La krisis des anciens Grecs n'est pas notre concept moderne de crise, profondément modifié avec le temps. Que signifie-t-elle dès lors ? Il faut un retour aux sources de la notion, à savoir aux premiers textes grecs qui lui donnent une place majeure. La polysémie du mot grec, frappante, peut sembler faire obstacle à toute détermination d'une signification. Pourtant, l’enquête philologique proposée, attentive à la pluralité des sens en contexte, ne renonce pas à l’exigence de formuler une conception d’ensemble de la notion. C’est que la krisis des Grecs a bien, dans les textes où elle est analysée, poésie épique archaïque, médecine hippocratique, philosophie de Parménide et de Platon, des traits généraux qui la structurent. Elle peut se concevoir comme une décision génératrice, au sens physique du terme, dotée d’une temporalité de la rupture, savamment pensée et mise en scène.

‘The interpretours of Plato,’ wrote Sir Thomas Elyot in The Governour (1531), ‘do think that the wonderful and incomprehensible order of the celestial bodies, I mean sterres and planettes, and their motions harmonicall, gave to them that intensifly and by the deepe serche of raison beholde their coursis, in the sondrye diversities of number and tyme, a forme of imitation of a semblable motion, which they called daunsigne or sltation.’ The image of the planets and stars engaged in an ordered and measured dance is an ancient one. Plato articulated it in a passage in the Timaeus, where he likened the apparent motions of the planets and stars to ‘choreiai’ (choral dances). Through the centuries the analogy has challenged Plator’s interpreters to define and elaborate the image. Miller has examined a range of poetic and philosophical texts influenced by Plato cosmology, and has discovered frequent comparisons of the cosmic order to ‘daunsigne.’ He suggests that the vision of the cosmic dance did not develop at random in Western intellectual history but originated in a specific philosophical context and passed through stages of evolution that reflect Gnostic, Christian, Stoic, and Neoplatonic responses to Plato. He argues that the historical variations of the image were often closely related to adaption or criticisms of Plato’s theories of visual perception and intellectual vision. The dance, in conjunction with images such as the Great chain of Being and the Lyre of the Heavens, became the dominant image of a peculiarly Late Antique world-view which Miller (after Augustine) has called the ‘poetic universe’; a world where metaphors, metonymies, and personifications could exist in fact as well as in word. The result of Miller’s analysis is vast in scope. The nine chapters of the book each present a thesis on a particular author, but all function together like links in a chain. Miller has been described as ‘an historian of visions’; the book has been likened to Auerbach’s Mimesis. It is a remarkable contribution to an understanding of the complex interaction of ideas and images in time.

L'Anonyme d'Oxyrhynchos avait donné un récit clair et dense des événements survenus en Grèce et en Asie durant la période qui l'intéressait, une vingtaine d'années environ. Mais il en est des fragments d'un texte comme de ceux d'une statue: il faut restituer les parties manquantes pour comprendre l'originalité de l'oeuvre en partie détruite par le temps, et on ne peut le faire qu'à partir d'autres répliques, heureusement conservées, des premiers travaux historiques, entièrement perdus, consacrés aux guerres qui aboutirent à la précaire «hégémonie thébaine». Il nous a donc paru indispensable de donner une traduction aussi exacte que possible d'un certain nombre de textes grecs et latins traitant les mêmes sujets que l'Anonyme. Le lecteur disposera ainsi d'un «dossier» thématique où il trouvera des éléments de comparaison et des informations complémentaires. Il pourra également prendre la mesure des déficiences de Xénophon.

Explores the social function of historiography in the Justinianic age and the post-Roman kingdoms of the West. The six-volume sub-series 'Historiography and Identity' unites a wide variety of case studies from Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, from the Latin West to the emerging polities in Northern and Eastern Europe, and also incorporates a Eurasian perspective which includes the Islamic World and China. The series aims to develop a critical methodology that harnesses the potential of identity studies to enhance our understanding of the construction and impact of historiography. This second volume of the series studies the social function of historiography in the Justinianic age and the post-Roman kingdoms of the West. The papers explore how writers in Constantinople and in the various kingdoms from Italy to Britain adopted late antique historiographical traditions and adapted them in response to the new needs and challenges created by the transformation of the political and social order. What was the significance of their choices between different models (or their creation of new ones) for their 'vision of community'? The volume provides a representative analysis of the historiographical resources of ethnic, political, and religious identifications created in the various Western kingdoms. In doing so, it seeks to understand the extant works as part of a once much wider and more polyphonic historiographical debate.
