Goethe's Willhelm Meister novels, widely held to be the most significant and influential in all of German literature, have traditionally been classed as Bildungsroman, or 'novels of formation'. In Goethe and the Myth of Bildungsroman, Frederick Amrine offers a unique reading of Wilhelm Meister's Lehrjahre and Wilhelm Meister's Wanderjahre, which posits the second novel as a sequel to the first. Deconstructing and jettisoning the notion of the Bildungsroman, the features of the novels which have historically proved problematic for critics, seeming to testify to the novels' disunity, become instead the articulation points of a subtle concord between thematic and formal elements. Reading the novels in light of the eminent criticism of Northrop Frye, this book productively shifts away from social commentary towards the archetypal and symbolic, showing Goethe not to be an exception within world literature; rather, that he participates deeply in its overarching structures.

Because the category of ‘late style’ is extremely common in literary studies, it is often used uncritically. This is indicated by the simple fact that the relevant reference books have no entries on the concept. This volume aims to delineate phenomenon of late style as sharply as possible. Its contributions (in English and German) go beyond the widespread use of the term as a biographical or epochal benchmark in order to determine the aesthetic and functional principles that govern its application. In this connection, Goethe’s work provides an outstanding field for theoretical exploration. This is not only because Goethe’s work was essential for the emergence of a discourse of ‘late style’ in the early twentieth century. On the contrary, research on Goethe’s late style continues to be a desideratum: Although scholars have examined the motifs, themes, and topics of most of Goethe's later works throughout the last sixty years, the question of lateness as a literary characteristic has rarely been raised. Thus, the volume provides a problem-orientied contribution both to Goethe philology and to literary criticism in general. So selbstverständlich uns der Begriff des ‚Spätwerks‘ in der allgemeinen Kommunikation über Literatur erscheint, so erstaunlich ist seine weitgehend unreflektierte, zumeist nur intuitive Verwendung im Bereich der Literaturwissenschaft. Dieses Buch fragt nach den Möglichkeiten einer möglichst trennscharfen Konturierung des Phänomens ‚Spätwerk‘. Dabei wird die verbreitete Verwendung des Begriffes als eine von außen herangetragene biographische oder epochale Orientierungsgröße überschritten, um so die ästhetischen Eigengesetzlichkeiten des Phänomens von innen zu erhellen. Als Erkundungsfeld bietet sich das Werk desjenigen Schriftstellers an, das für den im frühen 20. Jahrhundert aufkommenden Spätwerkdiskurs von richtungsweisender Bedeutung ist: das Werk Goethes. Hierfür spricht zudem ein charakteristisches Desiderat: Denn obwohl die Forschung der letzten sechzig Jahre das Goethe'sche Spätwerk in seinen komplexen Schreibweisen bereits weitgehend erschlossen hat, ist die Frage nach seiner Spätzeitlichkeit als einer poetischen Qualität bislang nur gestreift worden. Damit liefert dieses Buch einen problemorientierten Beitrag sowohl zur Goethe-Philologie wie auch zur Literaturwissenschaft im Allgemeinen.
