Obstetrical care in the family medicine setting is an ever-evolving discipline. In addition to routine updates due to the passage of time, several new developments have occurred in the field since the last edition of this book was published. Among these developments are advances in prenatal assessment and diagnosis, recommendations for vaccination in pregnancy, assessment and management of infectious disease in pregnancy, and management of chronic disease concurrent with pregnancy. All thirty-one chapters of the second edition of this text have been thoroughly updated. Several chapters warranted substantive expansion and revision due to the developments on the topic. These chapters include preconception counseling, prenatal care, dysmorphic growth, preterm labor, recurrent pregnancy loss, infection, diabetes, postdates, normal labor, induction and augmentation, prolonged labor, fetal heart rate monitoring, routine postpartum and complications postpartum. A new chapter has been added that covers vaccination in pregnancy as well as other routine wellness recommendations. Now in its fully revised and expanded third edition, Obstetrics in Family Medicine reflects the significant changes that have occurred in the field since 2015. This book remains the definitive resource for meeting the needs of a wide range of primary care providers who provide direct or indirect care of patients of childbearing age. This book also appeals to nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nursing personnel working in the primary care setting. Additionally, this book serves as a useful guide for medical providers who intersect with pregnant, or possibly pregnant patients including emergency medicine physicians, surgeons, EMT's and paramedics. .

This text creates a framework for the integration of urological care into the long-term management of patients with progressive neurological conditions. It begins with a general review of the neuroanatomy and physiology of the bladder, followed by a discussion of common techniques for evaluating bladder and upper tract function, and the general principles of bladder management in patients with neurogenic bladder disease. Section II narrows the scope of each chapter to focus on specific neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia, and Cerebral Palsy. Each chapter begins with a brief synopsis of the neurologic basis of each disease, followed by its most common urologic manifestations, specific recommendations for urologic care in each disease state, and finally a recommended pathway for integrated long-term care of these patients based on available evidence and expert opinion. The final section of the text reviews the generalized care of patients with advanced disease, including palliative and end of life options, focusing on urologic interventions. Urological Care for Patients with Progressive Neurological Conditions will be an invaluable resource for urologists, neurologists, and all health care providers treating patients with neurological diseases.

This unique, step-by-step guide for instructors offers a comprehensive approach to teaching pre-clerkship medical students -- as well as residents and even experienced physicians -- about the transformational impact of mindful medical practice, or mindful whole person care. Indeed, integrating contemplative practices – such as “presence” and “relationship” -- into medical education is an established but still rapidly growing approach to bringing experiential learning to medical students. This book gives the rationale for administering a mindful medical practice (MMP) course, details the moment to moment process for each of the 7 classes that are outlined, and summarizes a way forward for instructors. Pages of the book can be copied and used in class with students, and there are appendices that include helpful tools a teacher can immediately copy and hand out in each class. Handy, one-page templates are provided at the end of each chapter for teachers to use as a guide while teaching each class. A unique contribution to the medical literature and the increasing focus on mindful medical practice, MD Aware: A Mindfulness-Based Whole Person Care Course Guide for Physicians is not only the ideal resource for teachers interested in setting up an MMP course in a medical school; it is also an invaluable practical guide for any clinician hoping to learn more about the importance and benefits of offering mindful medical practice to patients – and to themselves as healers.

This book serves as a comprehensive reference for the basic principles of caring for older adults, directly corresponding to the key competencies for medical student and residents. These competencies are covered in 10 sections, each with chapters that target the skills and knowledge necessary for achieving competency. Each of the 45 chapters follow a consistent format for ease of use, beginning with an introduction to the associated competency and concluding with the most salient points for mastery. Chapters also includes brief cases to provide context to the clinical reasoning behind the competency, strengthening the core understanding necessary to physicians of the future. Written by expert educators and clinicians in geriatric medicine, Geriatric Practice is key resource for students in geriatric medicine, family and internal medicine, specialties, hospice and nursing home training, and all clinicians studying to work with aging patients.

This volume is to examine the phenomena of non-disclosure in its wide ranging forms, study its properties, and to deepen the capacity of a mental health professional --as well as all clinicians who provide mental health counseling -- to detect and engage it across a range of clinical settings. Unengaged, sustained DNDD represents an impasse that is destructive to a clinician’s capacity to both understand and treat a patient. Successfully engaged, on the other hand, DNDD offers a unique perspective on in individuals anxieties, presuppositions, and mental functioning. A clinician who is both aware that a patient is withholding information, and comfortable with that awareness, may approach the patient material while listening for both indications of non-disclosed material and—critically—a growing awareness of psychopathology or other motivational forces driving non-disclosure. Written by experts in this area from both adult and child psychiatric specialties, this book is the first to address the issue of DNDD and present clinical pearls for addressing it. This text is a valuable resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, addiction medicine specialists, family physicians, and a wide array of clinicians treating patients who may struggle with disclosure and integrity.

"In Managing Health in the Genomic Era: A Guide to Family Health History and Disease Risk, Drs. Vincent C. Henrich, Lori A. Orlando, and Brian H. Shirts discuss the practical considerations surrounding the use of genomic and genetic tests to manage patient health, to provide adult disease risk assessment, to improve diagnosis, and to support effective interventions and treatment. In 10 chapters, evidence-based information and case studies are described and examine the central place of family health history (FHH) in genomic medicine, tools and strategies for compiling and analyzing family health history, how to identify existing and novel genetic markers, how to identify lineage specific (or rare) variants within families, and how to find effective interventions based on genetic testing results and FHH. Factors that influence clinical practice, including gene-environment interactions, FHH social networking, direct to consumer (DTC) genetic testing and data sharing, algorithms for analyzing genetic data, and patient counseling are discussed from the standpoint of clinical practice. Here, frontline healthcare providers will discover succinct commentary and key examples to assist with their local needs. Relevant principles of genetic biology and inheritance are explored and guidance on available support networks and online resources is also provided."--
