Gegenüber den älteren Humanismen zeichnet sich der europäische Humanismus im 18. Jahrhundert durch eine starke Erweiterung der Materialbasis aus. Die unmittelbare, dingliche und nicht mehr vorrangig textgebundene Kenntnis der Antike wird nachhaltig befördert. Zahlreiche Ausgrabungen wie in Herkulaneum und Pompeji eröffnen neue Zugangsmöglichkeiten. In den neu entstehenden Sammlungen wie auch in der zeitgenössischen Malerei, Plastik und Architektur gewinnt die Antike ein hohes Maß an Anschaulichkeit. Gerade die materiellen Funde führen maßgeblich zur Idealisierung antiker Humanität, der aber sehr bald auch markante Entidealisierungen gegenübergestellt werden. Welche Rolle spielen die neuen Funde und Befunde in den verschiedenen Künsten? Wo liegen die Grenzen des humanistischen Menschenbildes und seiner künstlerischen Formationen? Was wird ausgeschlossen und verdrängt? Welche Erkenntnisleistung kommt dabei den verschiedenen Künsten und Künstlern zu?
