"Before Colombia became one of the main producers of cocaine in the world in the 1980s, traffickers from the Caribbean coast partnered with American buyers in the 1970s to make this South American country the principal supplier of marijuana for the largest market in the world at the time, the US counterculture. Marijuana Boom offers a unique and in-depth perspective to this forgotten history. Combining archival research with extensive fieldwork, Lina Britto puts together fragmented pieces of evidence in order to understand the constellation of factors that produced the perfect storm, one that subverted life in a corner of the Caribbean, and changed Colombia for decades to come"--

One of the most surprising developments in Mexico's transition to democracy is the outbreak of criminal wars and large-scale criminal violence. Why did Mexican drug cartels go to war as the country transitioned away from one-party rule? And why have criminal wars proliferated as democracy has consolidated and elections have become more competitive subnationally? In Votes, Drugs, and Violence, Guillermo Trejo and Sandra Ley develop a political theory of criminal violence in weak democracies that elucidates how democratic politics and the fragmentation of power fundamentally shape cartels' incentives for war and peace. Drawing on in-depth case studies and statistical analysis spanning more than two decades and multiple levels of government, Trejo and Ley show that electoral competition and partisan conflict were key drivers of the outbreak of Mexico's crime wars, the intensification of violence, and the expansion of war and violence to the spheres of local politics and civil society.

The 12th volume of International Development Policy explores the relationship between international drug policy and development goals, both current and within a historical perspective. Contributions address the drugs and development nexus from a range of critical viewpoints, highlighting gaps and contradictions, as well as exploring strategies and opportunities for enhanced linkages between drug control and development programming. Criminalisation and coercive law enforcement-based responses in international and national level drug control are shown to undermine peace, security and development objectives.

Responding to the harms caused by drugs is one of the most challenging social policy issues of our time. In 'Child Rights and Drug Control on International Law', Damon Barrett explores the meaning of the child?s right to protection from drugs under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the relationship between this right and the UN drug control conventions. Adopting a critical approach, the book traces the intersecting histories of the treaties, the role of child rights in global drug policy discourse, and the practice of the Committee on the Rights of the Child. It invites us to reflect upon the potential for child rights to provide justification for state actions associated with wider human rights risks.
