Abstract

This edited volume has a two-fold purpose. First, comprehensive survey articles provide a way for beginners to ease into the corresponding sub-fields. These are then supplemented by original works that give the more advanced readers a glimpse of the current research in geometric analysis and related PDEs. The book is of significant interest for researchers, including advanced Ph.D. students, working in geometric analysis. Readers who have a secondary interest in geometric analysis will benefit from the survey articles. The results included in this book will stimulate further advances in the subjects: geometric analysis, including complex differential geometry, symplectic geometry, PDEs with a geometric origin, and geometry related to topology. Contributions by Claudio Arezzo, Alberto Della Vedova, Werner Ballmann, Henrik Matthiesen, Panagiotis Polymerakis, Sun-Yung A. Chang, Zheng-Chao Han, Paul Yang, Tobias Holck Colding, William P. Minicozzi II, Panagiotis Dimakis, Richard Melrose, Akito Futaki, Hajime Ono, Jiyuan Han, Jeff A. Abstract

This concise and practical textbook presents the essence of the theory on smooth manifolds. A key concept in mathematics, smooth manifolds are ubiquitous: They appear as Riemannian manifolds in differential geometry; as space-times in general relativity; as phase spaces and energy levels in mechanics; as domains of definition of ODEs in dynamical systems; as Lie groups in algebra and geometry; and in many other areas. The book first presents the language of smooth manifolds, culminating with the Frobenius theorem, before discussing the language of tensors (which includes a presentation of the exterior derivative of differential forms). It then covers Lie groups and Lie algebras, briefly addressing homogeneous manifolds. Integration on manifolds, explanations of Stokes’ theorem and de Rham cohomology, and rudiments of differential topology complete this work. It also includes exercises throughout the text to help readers grasp the theory, as well as more advanced problems for challenge-oriented minds at the end of each chapter. Conceived for a one-semester course on Differentiable Manifolds and Lie Groups, which is offered by many graduate programs worldwide, it is a valuable resource for students and lecturers alike. .

Abstract

This book contains a clear exposition of two contemporary topics in modern differential geometry: distance geometric analysis on manifolds, in particular, comparison theory for distance functions in spaces which have well defined bounds on their curvature the study of scalar curvature rigidity and positive mass theorems using spinors and the Dirac operator It is intended for both graduate students and researchers. This second edition has been updated to include recent developments such as promising results concerning the geometry of exit time moment spectra and potential analysis in weighted Riemannian manifolds, as well as results pertaining to an early conjecture on the geometry of the scalar curvature and speculations on new geometric approaches to the Index Theorem.

Abstract

The book consists of articles based on the XXXVIII Białowieża Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics, 2019. The series of Białowieża workshops, attended by a community of experts at the crossroads of mathematics and physics, is a major annual event in the field. The works in this book, based on presentations given at the workshop, are previously unpublished, at the cutting edge of current research, typically grounded in geometry and analysis, with applications to classical and quantum physics. For the past eight years, the Białowieża Workshops have been complemented by a School on Geometry and Physics, comprising series of advanced lectures for graduate students and early-career researchers. The extended abstracts of the five lecture series that were given in the eighth school are included. The unique character of the Workshop-and-School series draws on the venue, a famous historical, cultural and environmental site in the Białowieża forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre in the east of Poland: lectures are given in the Nature and Forest Museum and local traditions are interwoven with the scientific activities. The chapter “Toeplitz Extensions in Noncommutative Topology and Mathematical Physics” is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Abstract

This book gathers research papers and surveys on the latest advances in Schubert Calculus, presented at the International Festival in Schubert Calculus, held in Guangzhou, China on November 6–10, 2017. With roots in enumerative geometry and Hilbert's 15th problem, modern Schubert Calculus studies classical and quantum intersection rings on spaces with symmetries, such as flag manifolds. The presence of symmetries leads to particularly rich structures, and it connects Schubert Calculus to many branches of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, combinatorics, representation theory, and theoretical physics. For instance, the study of the quantum cohomology ring of a Grassmann manifold combines all these areas in an organic way. The book is useful for researchers and graduate students interested in Schubert Calculus, and more generally in the study of flag manifolds in relation to algebraic geometry, combinatorics, representation theory and mathematical physics. .

Abstract

This monograph collects cutting-edge results and techniques for solving nonlinear partial differential equations using critical points. Including many of the author’s own contributions, a range of proofs are conveniently collected here, Because the material is approached with rigor, this book will serve as an invaluable resource for exploring recent developments in this active area of research, as well as the numerous ways in which critical point theory can be applied. Different methods for finding critical points are presented in the first six chapters. The specific situations in which these methods are applicable is explained in detail. Focus then shifts toward the book’s main subject: applications to problems in mathematics and physics. These include topics such as Schrödinger equations, Hamiltonian systems, elliptic systems, nonlinear wave equations, nonlinear optics, semilinear PDEs, boundary value problems, and equations with multiple solutions. Readers will find this collection of applications convenient and thorough, with detailed proofs appearing throughout. Critical Point Theory will be ideal for graduate students and researchers interested in solving differential equations, and for those studying variational methods. An understanding of fundamental mathematical analysis is assumed. In particular, the basic properties of Hilbert and Banach spaces are used.

Abstract

This book provides a detailed introduction to recent developments in the theory of linear differential systems and integrable total differential systems. Starting from the basic theory of linear ordinary differential equations and integrable systems, it proceeds to describe Katz theory and its applications, extending it to the case of several variables. In addition, connection problems, deformation theory, and the theory of integral representations are comprehensively covered. Complete proofs are given, offering the reader a precise account of the classical and modern theory of linear differential equations in the complex domain, including an exposition of Pfaffian systems and their monodromy problems. The prerequisites are a course in complex analysis and the basics of differential equations, topology and differential geometry. This book will be useful for graduate students, specialists in differential equations, and for non-specialists who want to use differential equations. .

Abstract

Gathering and updating results scattered in journal articles over thirty years, this self-contained monograph gives a comprehensive introduction to the subject. Its goal is to: - motivate and explain the method for general Lie groups, reducing the proof of deep results in invariant analysis to the verification of two formal Lie bracket identities related to the Campbell-Hausdorff formula (the "Kashiwara-Vergne conjecture"); - give a detailed proof of the conjecture for quadratic and solvable Lie algebras, which is relatively elementary; - extend the method to symmetric spaces; here an obstruction appears, embodied in a single remarkable object called an "e-function"; - explain the role of this function in invariant analysis on symmetric spaces, its relation to invariant differential operators, mean value operators and spherical functions; - give an explicit e-function for rank one spaces (the hyperbolic spaces); - construct an e-function for general symmetric spaces, in the spirit of Kashiwara and Vergne's original work for Lie groups. The book includes a complete rewriting of several articles by the author, updated and improved following Alekseev, Meinrenken and Torossian's recent proofs of the conjecture. The chapters are largely independent of each other. Some open problems are suggested to encourage future research. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers with a basic knowledge of Lie theory.
