"Discover the many ways in which dams and levees are marvels of modern engineering through accessible text and informative photos. Each chapter focuses on an important aspect of these structures, including the history of their invention, examples of noteworthy dams and levees, related career paths, and stories of the tragedies that have occurred when dams and levees failed. This book's contents directly correlate with Next Generation Science Standards, ensuring that readers will be left with a deeper appreciation and respect for the engineering behind dams and levees, and the influence these beautiful structures have on our society."--Provided by publisher.

Dams are important engineering marvels. However, if not built correctly, dams can cause catastrophic damage to our buildings, land developments, and the natural world. With this book, readers will learn about the different types of dams, the materials needed to build them, the steps to preparing the dam site before construction begins, and the designing process. Readers explore the many benefits of dams, such as harnessing the power of water to create electricity and diverting water for irrigation. A step-by-step project helps young engineers conceptualize how much work is involved in building a dam and how important they truly are.

This proceedings book gathers contributions presented at the First International Conference on Embankment Dams (1st ICED, Beijing, 5–7 June 2020), which was the inaugural conference of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee TC210 on Embankment Dams. The contributions address five themes: (1) case histories on the failure of embankment dams and landslide dams; (2) dam failure process modelling; (3) soil mechanics for embankment dams; (4) dam risk assessment and management;and (5) monitoring, early warning and emergency response. These proceedings offer a unique resource that systematically presents recent dam breaching cases, their social impact, associated risk management strategies, and disposal methods for failed dams. It is an excellent reference guide for dam and levee engineers, flood safety officials, and emergency management agencies.

The Hydropower Sustainability Tools (HSTs) are a suite of assessment tools and guidance documents developed by a multi-stakeholder forum, aimed at driving continuous improvement in hydropower development and operations. They are useful beyond their original purpose as audit tools and can be used in World Bank Group (WBG) client countries to build capacity for sustainable hydropower. The environmental, social, and governance topics addressed by the HSTs are deliberately aligned with WBG frameworks, which provides opportunities for the tools to be used as complements to World Bank Group standards, including to help clients meet WBG requirements and support WBG staff in their due diligence and supervision. It is, however, important that WBG staff should give careful thought to selecting the tool that is most appropriate, given the nature and status of a project, and in a way that is consistent with policy requirements. The tools can also be used voluntarily by WBG client countries in the absence of WBG financing. The HSTs are widely regarded as useful reference tools and recognized as the best currently available measuring stick for principles of sustainable hydropower.
