In this cultural anthropological examination Frauke Johanna Ahrens enquires into the scientific significance of the herbarium sheets of the Herbarium Göttingen in the period from 1832 to 1852. Based on a historical, object-focused ethnography and praxeology she itemizes how during the establishing phase of the collection institutionalized in 1832 the scientific practices and epistemic interests mutually influenced one another and found expression in the botanical specimens themselves. Each of the five chapters is dedicated to one practice - opening up the collection, ascribing values, acquiring plant material, doing research on herbarium sheets and teaching with herbarium sheets. Together with detailed object descriptions, the analysis emphasizes the materiality of knowledge in this way.

Conflict, Heritage and World-Making in the Chaco explores the physical remains of the Chaco War (1932-35) - known as South America's first 'modern' armed conflict - in what is now present-day Paraguay. It shows how the material culture and heritage of modern conflict fuse together objects, people and landscapes, connecting them physically and conceptually across vast distances and time periods.

As a sign, tangible heritage is the most visible trace of the past in our daily life. In constant dialectic with the intangible heritage, it constitutes a physical presence that forces us to take concrete awareness. Knowledge of texts and stories, which for Vitruvius is the high road for the design and construction of a building, is also fundamental in the processes of deconstruction, according to the various stages and different perceptions, through ages and customs, up to retrace the process that transformed it into 'heritage'. The lexicon and the terminology of cultural heritage are in this sense the most important vector of knowledge, enhancement and dissemination. The volume seeks to bring together those who study the language of heritage, from different countries and through different methodologies, and those involved in its management, in order to offer points of view and ideas on the narration and perception of tangible and intangible heritage, in mediation across eras, cultures and identities.

This book critically reviews state-religion models and the ways in which different countries manage religious diversity, illuminating different responses to the challenges encountered in accommodating both majorities and minorities. The country cases encompass eight world regions and 23 countries, offering a wealth of research material suitable to support comparative research. Each case is analysed in depth looking at historical trends, current practices, policies, legal norms and institutions.By looking into state-religion relations and governance of religious diversity in regions beyond Europe, we gain insights into predominantly Muslim countries (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia), countries with pronounced historical religious diversity (India and Lebanon) and into a predominantly migrant pluralist nation (Australia). These insights can provide a basis for re-thinking European models and learning from experiences of governing religious diversity in other socio-economic and geopolitical contexts. Key analytical and comparative reflections inform the introduction and concluding chapters. This volume offers a research and study companion to better understand the connection between state-religion relations and the governance of religious diversity in order to inform both policy and research efforts in accommodating religious diversity. Given its accessible language and further readings provided in each chapter, the volume is ideally suited for undergraduate and graduate students. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers working in the wider field of ethnic, migration, religion and citizenship studies.

Cross-border mobility and declared work across the EU underpin a fair and well-functioning labour market. But as labour mobility within the EU grows, so do concerns around undeclared work and social fraud. These concerns often derive from dynamic and complex schemes for evasion of taxes and social security contributions, such as fraudulent letterbox companies or bogus selfemployment, which operate across borders, sometimes spanning multiple countries. An effective combination of direct and indirect controls across borders can help enforcement bodies across Europe to address those issues. Concerted and joint inspections are part of these measures and can be an effective deterrent by bringing together the investigative powers, expertise and resources of multiple partners. They also encourage cooperation between enforcement bodies across the EU and demonstrate to the public that complex cross-border fraud is being tackled. However, cross-border inspections remain until now limited in number and can be hampered by incompatible legal frameworks within different Member States, as well as issues around resourcing and data sharing. Therefore, more efforts are needed at national and EU level to support and coordinate cross-border inspection activities [...] Effective cross-border inspections require national and EU-wide support. Given the current challenges to organise cross border inspections, this toolkit offers guidance on how to prepare, implement, and follow up effective cross-border inspections to ensure that EU rules on labour mobility are enforced fairly, coherently and effectively.
