Abstract

Art, pedagogy and the destruction of experience under lockdown: how culture defines the difference between surviving the pandemic and thriving beyond itThe Covid-19 crisis has taught us how invaluable human presence is, not least in terms of the arts and pedagogy; ultimately, neither art nor education can do without physical proximity. Like works of art, people lose what one might call their auras, when kept at digital arm's length; few would deny that the pandemic has negatively affected our ability to read bodily cues and non-linguistic signals, and art likewise is lifeless when it cannot engage with the proprioception of bodies. In Nearness, philosopher Marlies De Munck and sociologist Pascal Gielen diagnose this new reality with which we are all contending, arguing that it is culture that defines the difference between surviving and living, that offers a model for thriving rather than merely persisting.Bron : https://www.standaardboekhandel.be/p/nearness-art-and-education-after-covid-19-9789492095862

Abstract

"From one of China's most acclaimed and decorated writers comes a powerful first-person account of life in Wuhan during the COVID-19 outbreak. On January 25, 2020, after the central government imposed a lockdown in Wuhan, acclaimed Chinese writer Fang Fang began publishing an online diary. In the days and weeks that followed, Fang Fang's nightly postings gave voice to the fears, frustrations, anger, and hope of millions of her fellow citizens, reflecting on the psychological impact of forced isolation, the role of the internet as both community lifeline and source of misinformation, and most tragically, the lives of neighbors and friends taken by the deadly virus. A fascinating eyewitness account of events as they unfold, Wuhan Diary captures the challenges of daily life and the changing moods and emotions of being quarantined without reliable information. Fang Fang finds solace in small domestic comforts and is inspired by the courage of friends, health professionals and volunteers, as well as the resilience and perseverance of Wuhan's nine million residents. But, by claiming the writer's duty to record she also speaks out against social injustice, abuse of power, and other problems which impeded the response to the epidemic and gets herself embroiled in online controversies because of it. As Fang Fang documents the beginning of the global health crisis in real time, we are able to identify patterns and mistakes that many of the countries dealing with the novel coronavirus have later repeated. She reminds us that, in the face of the new virus, the plight of the citizens of Wuhan is also that of citizens everywhere. As Fang Fang writes: The virus is the common enemy of humankind; that is a lesson for all humanity. The only way we can conquer this virus and free ourselves from its grip is for all members of humankind to work together. Blending the intimate and the epic, the profound and the quotidian, Wuhan Diary is a remarkable record of an extraordinary time -- Amazon.com

Abstract

The devastating impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) on developing countries have tested the limits, ingenuity and flexibility of development co-operation while also uncovering best practices. This 58th edition of the Development Co-operation Report draws out early insights from leaders, OECD members, experts and civil society on the implications of coronavirus (COVID-19) for global solidarity and international co-operation for development in 2021 and beyond. The report suggests ways forward for the international development community as a whole for bold action and systemic reform to build resilient national and international systems capable of coping with global shocks, and providing and protecting global public goods while reinforcing the fundamental building blocks for sustainable development. The annual “development co-operation at a glance” infographics showcase the latest trends in development finance for over 80 providers of development co-operation, including members of the OECD, the Development Assistance Committee, other countries and philanthropic foundations.

Abstract

COVID-19 has spread around the world, causing tremendous structural change, and severely affecting global supply chains and financial operations. As such there is a need for analytic tools help deal with the impact of the pandemic on the world’s economies; these tools are not panaceas and certainly won’t cure the problems faced, but they offer a means to aid governments, firms, and individuals in coping with specific problems. This book provides an overview of the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluates its effect on financial and supply chain operations. It then discusses epidemic modeling, presenting sources of quantitative and text data, and describing how models are used to illustrate the pandemic impact on supply chains, macroeconomic performance on financial operations. It highlights the specific experiences of the banking system, which offers predictions of the impact on the Swedish banking sector. Further, it examines models related to pandemic planning, such as evaluation of financial contagion, debt risk analysis, and health system efficiency performance, and addresses specific models of pandemic parameters. The book demonstrates various tools using available data on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While it includes some citations, it focuses on describing the methods and explaining how they work, rather than on theory. The data sets and software presented were all selected on the basis of their widespread availability to any reader with computer links.

Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly referred to as COVID-19, is perhaps the greatest threat to life, and lifestyles, around the world in more than a century. Although there is little global agreement on many issues related to the virus, there is widespread agreement that the actual number of cases - both of those infected and of those who have died as a result of infection - is certainly much higher than official numbers suggest. The impact of the virus, however, has spread well beyond the realm of the medical, also heavily impacting social, cultural, economic, political, and quotidian ways of living for nearly every human being on the planet. The two edited volumes in this set contribute to a broader understanding of the impact COVID-19 is having, and will have, on our understandings, efforts, and decisions of the future of global society.

Abstract

"Since the identification of the first cases of the coronavirus in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, there has been a significant amount of confusion regarding the origin and spread of the so-called 'coronavirus', officially named SARS-CoV-2, and the cause of the disease COVID-19. Conflicting messages from the media and officials across different countries and organizations, the abundance of disparate sources of information, unfounded conspiracy theories on the origins of the newly emerging virus and the inconsistent public health measures across different countries, have all served to increase the level of anxiety in the population. Where did the virus come from? How is it transmitted? How does it cause disease? Is it like flu? What is a pandemic? What can we do to stop its spread? Written by a leading expert, this concise and accessible introduction provides answers to the most common questions surrounding coronavirus for a general audience"--

Abstract

"This volume presents a comprehensive account of the COVID-19 pandemic, also known as the novel coronavirus pandemic, as it happened. Originating in China in late 2019, the COVID-19 outbreak spread across the entire world in a matter of 3-4 months. This volume examines the first responses to the pandemic, the contexts of earlier epidemics and the epidemiological basics of infectious diseases. Further, it also discusses patterns in the spread of the disease; the management and containment of infections at the personal, national and global level; effects on trade and commerce; the social and psychological impact on people; disruption and postponement of international events; the role of various international organizations like WHO in the search for solutions; and, the race for a vaccine or the cure. Authored by a medical professional and an economist working on the frontlines, this book gives a nuanced, verified, and fact-checked analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its global response. A one-stop resource on the COVID-19 outbreak, it is an indispensable read for every reader, as well as a holistic work for scholars and researchers of medical sociology, public health, political economy, public policy and governance, sociology of health and medicine, para-medical and medical practitioners. It will also be a great resource for policy makers, government departments, and civil society organizations working in the area"--
