In 2020 komen er voor de Vlaamse norbertijn Luc Vankrunkelsven (64) enkele boeiende zaken samen. Voorjaar 1990 nam hij, met enkele tochtgenoten het initiatief tot oprichting van Wervel - de Werkgroep voor rechtvaardige en Verantwoorde Landbouw. In 2000 besloot hij om na vele actieve jaren, naast Wervel tot 1992 onder meer het bezinningscentrum van de Abdij van Averbode, een sabbat te nemen. Tijdens die sabbat wilde hij zijn droom, van jongsaf, waar maken: een ontmoeting aangaan met de inheemse volkeren van Brazilië.Tijdens zijn eerste bezoek aan dat land, voorjaar 2000 gedurende zes maanden, doorkruiste hij met bus en trein het enorme land. Zijn ontmoetingen en activiteiten resulteerden in een aantal boeken, waarin hij zijn ervaringen wil delen. "The artists featured in this book proffer a radical and innovative formal language that positions interiority as both political and aesthetic. The work of Njideka Akunyili Crosby comprises vibrantly patterned paintings on paper that negotiate the complex cultural terrain of a life formed between two worlds: her adopted home in America and her native Nigeria. Inspired by photography, fashion, architecture, and design, as well as her own family history, Akunyili Crosby's works often feature domestic spaces that function as physical, conceptual, and emotional points of arrival and departure. Conversely, the Portuguese sculptor Leonor Antunes focuses on migration and the transformation of form and ideas beyond temporal and geographical spaces. The starting point for her elegant site-specific sculptures is the exploration of art, design, and architectural history. Adriana Vareĵo addresses the colonial history of Brazil in her visceral sculptures and paintings. She often deploys the motif of the wall, the boundary between inside and outside, in her work. The omnipresence of the past also colors the work of trained stage designer Henrike Naumann, whose immersive installations engage with the history of East-West German relations, as well as contemporary instances of right-wing ideology. Pourquoi et comment un médiocre parlementaire d'extrême droite, nostalgique de la dictature militaire, ouvertement raciste, misogyne et homophobe a-t-il pu se hisser à la tête du plus grand pays d'Amérique latine ? L'arrivée de Bolsonaro à la présidence du Brésil n'est ni un événement fortuit, ni une parenthèse sans lendemain. Portée par une lame de fond, elle est à la fois le produit des circonstances et la conséquence d'un travail de conquête et de formatage de l'opinion par de nouvelles droites radicales et militantes.Dans un contexte marqué par une profonde crise économique, morale et institutionnelle, ces courants ont exploité les frustrations et les ressentiments de la société brésilienne, pour s'imposer aux affaires. Avec l'appui des vieilles oligarchies et des secteurs les plus conservateurs, ils entendent aujourd'hui solder l'héritage du "lulisme" et dicter leur agenda ultralibéral, rétrograde et autoritaire.Révision des droits sociaux, démantèlement des protections environnementales, privatisation des entreprises publiques, réalignement de la politique étrangère sur les Etats-Unis, croisade morale et sécuritaire..., le tournant engagé risque de réduire à néant les progrès démocratiques engrangés au terme de plusieurs décennies de luttes. One of the greatest challenges in the twenty-first century is to address large, deep, and historic deficits in human development. Democracy at Work explores a crucial question: how does democracy, with all of its messy, contested, and, time-consuming features, advance well-being and improve citizens' lives? Professors Brian Wampler, Natasha Borges Sugiyama, and Michael Touchton argue that differences in the local robustness of three democratic pathways - participatory institutions, rights-based social programs, and inclusive state capacity - best explain the variation in how democratic governments improve well-being. Using novel data from Brazil and innovative analytic techniques, the authors show that participatory institutions permit citizens to express voice and exercise vote, inclusive social programs promote citizenship rights and access to public resources, and more capable local states use public resources according to democratic principles of rights protections and equal access. The analysis uncovers how democracy works to advance capabilities related to poverty, health, women's empowerment, and education.
