« Faire connaître les Kararaô, un groupe d'Indiens Kayapo du Brésil central qui ne compte en 2010 que cinquante-quatre personnes, en se concentrant sur leur histoire extrêmement complexe : telle est la finalité de cet essai signé par l'anthropologue Gustaaf Verswijver après trois années de recherches intensives menées sur l'histoire de ce peuple très peu connu. Une histoire qui, bien que les Kararaô ne se séparent des autres groupes Kayapo qu'au début des années 1930, se compose d'une suite ininterrompue de scissions et de fusions, de déplacements pour échapper aux attaques et aux massacres, de conséquences désastreuses provoquées par le rapprochement avec la société brésilienne, à laquelle ils consentent. Cette histoire reflète non seulement la lutte pour la survie des Kararaô, mais elle témoigne encore de l'incapacité de l'État brésilien à leur fournir une aide adéquate avant les années 1970. Elle atteste enfin de l'impunité dont bénéficient les colons brésiliens (et leurs patrons) qui ont entrepris d'éliminer les Indiens. S'intéresser aujourd'hui aux Kararaô relève de l'urgence au vu des menaces nombreuses pesant sur eux. L'un des plus grands barrages hydroélectriques au monde a été construit à proximité de leur zone d'habitat, affectant leurs pêcheries et créant des mares d'eau stagnante propices aux maladies d'origine hydrique et au paludisme. Ils souffrent d'autre part de la déforestation et de l'exploitation illégale des ressources abondantes naturelles de leurs terres.
