Abstract

Purpose: The notion of embodied trainers is an increasingly relevant concept in telerehabilitation. However, few researchers have studied the impact of embodied trainers on several patient outcomes compared to more traditional telerehabilitation practices where embodied trainers are not used. This master’s thesis contributes to the further exploration of the importance of embodied trainers in the field of telerehabilitation. Design approach: A between-subjects online experiment was conducted in which participants were randomly assigned to either a control condition, in which there was no notion of an embodied trainer, or a treatment condition, in which the use of embodied trainers was mentioned. Findings: In general, no strongly significant effect of the inclusion of an embodied trainer on the patient outcomes was examined. Nonetheless, the results indicated several interesting outcomes regarding the perceived effectiveness and the willingness of patients to replace their physical consultations. Further research will be needed to confirm these preliminary findings. Conclusion: In most cases, the implementation of an embodied trainer might not be worthwhile. However, additional physical experiments are needed to further enhance the results.
