"Unequal Partners is a portrait of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur that takes readers between the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the United States, and Belgium, illuminating how the nexus of gender, race, economic inequality, and colonial history plays out in transnational religious organizations. While much current scholarship on Catholic sisters focuses on the decline in numbers in the West, sociologist Casey Clevenger casts her gaze on the Global South, where female Catholic orders remain vital. While the numbers of sisters in the old centers of Catholic power are declining, most of their religious orders are still headquartered in Europe or the United States, embedded in a colonial past that influences how the orders operate in the Global South. Attuned to this long history, Clevenger skillfully places the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in their global and historical context, revealing the ways access to knowledge, power, resources, and the politics of development lie at the heart of this and any partnership between groups of people in the Global North and Global South. Bringing the sisters' voices to the fore, Clevenger leads us to an understanding of how this transnational organization has persisted over time as a coherent whole, avoiding the splintering that is an all-too-common fate for religious groups and weathering the tide of a changing world"--

"Philip Mansel's book is poised to become the new standard English-language biography of Louis XIV, one that takes into account the revolution in the last fifty years in knowledge about every aspect of the king's reign: the army; Catholicism; diplomacy; the arts; music; medicine; homosexuality at his court; the role of women and the publication of the entire correspondence of his second wife, Madame de Maintenon. This is a global biography of a global king, whose power on the French monarchy and state was large but also limited by laws and circumstances, and whose interests and ambitions stretched from the eastern frontiers of his territory, which he enlarged to what is essentially France's shape today, to the territories along the Mississippi and Mekong rivers. Through it all, we watch Louis XIV progressively turning from a dazzling, attractive monarch to a belligerent reactionary who sets France on the path to 1789"--

This project investigates the emergence and development of monumental enclosure walls in ancient Egypt, drawing on a wealth of evidence from published excavation reports and new fieldwork conducted at the sites of Tell Edfu, Dendara, and Uronarti. Enclosure walls were defining features of ancient Egyptian communities: they divided sectors within settlements, delimited temples, administrative buildings, citadels, fortresses, mortuary monuments, or palaces, encompassed entire towns, and in rare instances restricted access across broader regions. This dissertation argues that ancient Egyptian monumental enclosure walls should be reconceptualized as an architectural tool through which Egyptian authorities attempted to exert control over the geographic and symbolic landscape. Their ubiquity, monumentality, and physicality readily facilitated their appropriation as a symbol of power, protection, and control by the Pharaonic state—walls figured prominently in metonyms for the traditional Egyptian capital at Memphis and even in the etymology of the word “Egypt”, to say nothing of their prominence in funerary spells and literary texts. The nature of the authorities demanding the construction of such walls might vary, whether embodied in the form of a royal decree from the Pharaoh himself, royal officials acting on behalf of the Pharaonic state, or more communal impulses towards defense in times of crisis and insecurity. Whatever defensive functions they might have, walls, inevitably, are political constructions: they divide the intramural from the extramural, reinforcing socially imposed or negotiated boundaries. Particularly in the case of mudbrick walls that require regular maintenance and refurbishing, such walls could only could continue to function with the support of local authorities, or else they would inevitably be replaced, erode, and collapse into obsolescence. Yet even in these cases, the memory of massive walling projects at times impacted much later settlement planning. The dissertation begins by outlining functional categories of enclosure walls and words in the Egyptian language used to describe walls and various constructions typically surrounded by an enclosure. The materiality of enclosure walls is then interrogated before the walls of Tell Edfu are discussed in greater detail as a more focused case study. Subsequent chapters detail how enclosure walls were built and how such labor might have been organized, the symbolic and political power of such constructions, and finally, the legacy of monumental enclosure walls within ancient Egyptian settlements. A site gazetteer is included as an appendix to aid future researchers.

rowing out of the collaborative research of an American ethnomusicologist and Zimbabwean musician, Paul F. Berliner’s The Art of Mbira documents the repertory for a keyboard instrument known generally as mbira. At the heart of this work lies the analysis of the improvisatory processes that propel mbira music’s magnificent creativity. In this book, Berliner provides insight into the communities of study, performance, and worship that surround mbira. He chronicles how master player Cosmas Magaya and his associates have developed their repertory and practices over more than four decades, shaped by musical interaction, social and political dynamics in Zimbabwe, and the global economy of the music industry. At once a detailed exposition of the music’s forms and practices, it is also an indispensable historical and cultural guide to mbira in a changing world. Together with Berliner and Magaya’s compendium of mbira compositions, Mbira’s Restless Dance, The Art of Mbira breaks new ground in the depth and specificity of its exploration of an African musical tradition, and in the entwining of the authors’ collaborative voices. It is a testament to the powerful relationship between music and social life—and the rewards of lifelong musical study, performance, and friendship.

"Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979) was arguably one of the most iconic figures in twentieth-century music, and certainly the most prominent woman musician of her time. Her reputation was such that for any composer, but especially American composers--from Aaron Copland to Philip Glass--a pilgrimage to Paris to study with her was obligatory. But how to define and account for Boulanger's impact on the music world is still unclear. Composer, performer, conductor, impresario, as well as a teacher of great personal charisma and inspirational effect, Boulanger engaged in a vast array of activities in a variety of media, from composition to performance, from private lessons and lecture-recitals to radio broadcasts, conducting, and recording. Her life takes us from a time in the late nineteenth century when it was hardly conceivable for a woman to make a career in music to the moment in the late twentieth century when those careers were imaginable, thanks in great part to the example of Boulanger and others of her generation. Ultimately, this volume takes its title as a topic for exploration-looking at the geography of transatlantic and international exchange and disruption within which her career unfolded and asking what worlds Boulanger belonged to, and in what sense we can consider any of them to be "hers.""--

Scholarship on Babylonian administration during the Kassite period (ca. 1595–1155 BCE) has tended to paint the provincial government under the governor of Nippur (šandabakku) as a highly centralized one that exerted significant political, economic, and religious control over the province at large, as well as the city’s temples. In this dissertation, I investigate the relationship between Nippur’s provincial administration and the city’s temple households through a case study of the economic transactions recorded between the šandabakku and a pair of EREŠ.DINGIR priestesses. The documents in question include those pertaining to the care and management of institutional livestock, a topic that has been historically understudied for the Kassite period. Although scholars have interpreted some of the documents as evidence of the governor’s authority over the use and disposal of temple property, I argue that such a reconstruction is founded on uncritical assumptions, misreadings, and misinterpretations of the texts, which can be traced back to a feudal model of the Kassite state proposed by Kemal Balkan in the 1940s. By reanalyzing and synthesizing these texts, I propose instead that the EREŠ.DINGIR household functioned as a distinct and semi-autonomous economic entity rather than a mere arm of the provincial administration. Furthermore, the evidence I consider also brings into question the overarching extent of economic centralization as it pertains to the province of Nippur.

Lavishly illustrated with full-color geological maps, tables of strata, geological cross-sections, photographs, and fossil illustrations from the archives of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, the Geological Society, the London Natural History Museum, and others, Strata provides the first complete presentation of the revolutionary work of nineteenth-century geologist William Smith, the so-called father of English geology. It illustrates the story of his career, from apprentice to surveyor for hire and fossil collector, from his 1799 geological map of Bath and table of strata to his groundbreaking 1815 geological strata map, and from his imprisonment for debt to his detailed stratigraphical county maps. This sumptuous volume begins with an introduction by Douglas Palmer that places Smith’s work in the context of earlier, concurrent, and subsequent ideas regarding the structure and natural processes of the earth, geographical mapping, and biostratigraphical theories. The book is then organized into four parts, each beginning with four sheets from Smith’s hand-colored, 1815 strata map, accompanied by related geological cross-sections and county maps, and followed by fossil illustrations by Smith contemporary James Sowerby, all organized by strata. Essays between each section explore the aims of Smith’s work and its application in the fields of mining, agriculture, cartography and hydrology. Strata concludes with reflections on Smith’s later years as an itinerant geologist and surveyor, plagiarism by a rival, receipt of the first Wollaston Medal in recognition of his achievements, and the influence of his geological mapping and biostratigraphical theories on the sciences—all of which culminated in the establishment of the modern geological timescale. Featuring a foreword by Robert Macfarlane, Strata is a glorious testament to the lasting geological and illustrative genius of William Smith, a collection as colossal and awe-inspiring as the layers of the Earth themselves.
