Abstract

The basic task of anthropologists and other social scientists doing ethnographic fieldwork is to try to enter, respectfully and with their hosts' permission and an open mind, the world of the "other." Researchers may attempt to observe and participate in that world; record, understand, and analyse it; and eventually communicate its ways and logic to those outside it in order to expand understanding of human sociocultural diversity. Sometimesmore often than one might thinkthe world of the other is not limited to this-worldly ideas and institutions, values, behavioural norms, and ways of seeing, being, and doing.
