Abstract

International lecturers and academics address issues centred on the fundamental role played by the urban centres and port poles of Adriatic Puglia and the Tyrrhenian Sea in ancient and modern history for the development of Mediterranean civilization. The common denominator of the themes tackled is therefore the urban historical landscape, outlined through the gaze of the most varied disciplines - from the history of art, architecture and the city to urban historical iconography and cartography, from archaeology to economic history, to that of building materials and their technological and chromatic use - drawing on many, and in more than one case unpublished, documentary and iconographic sources. A contribution of ideas in the common objective of knowledge and enhancement of the landscape, urban and architectural environment of those historic centers within the current debate on the fate of cultural heritage in Italy. For the territory of Gallipoli and Salento, a valuable tool for the identification of the most appropriate strategies for the exploitation of its recognized beauty, not separated from traditional hospitality.

Abstract

Urban Connections in the Contemporary Pedestrian Landscape explores the significant physical and cultural changes in our urban areas following the implementation of design strategies and increased pedestrian activity. Beginning with a history of the urban grid, the book then discusses experiential factors of pedestrianized urban landscapes in three scales, arterials, collectors and locals, with an emphasis on inductive and deductive design alternatives. It closely examines elements derived from current urban pedestrian experiences including form, scale, surfaces and identity and provides alternative design solutions for the future. Uniquely focusing on a hierarchical discussion of the quality of contemporary landscape design applications within the urban grid, and with illustrated examples throughout the text, this will be useful recommended reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students on urban landscape and design courses.

Abstract

A town is not simply a collection of streets and houses with a certain number of inhabitants, but is, above all, the profound expression of the culture of the people who live in it. This book aims to provide students and teachers with analytical methods and ways of considering a town, so that they may make the place where they live their own. Pondicherry has been chosen as an example for this analysis. Various chapters deal with the site of Pondicherry, its morphology and plan, its urban landscape and landmarks, its architecture (with emphasis on the Tamil house) and its socio-cultural aspects. The book provides several drawings, maps, lists, elevations and photographs for a better reading of the town. It is available in three versions: French, English and Tamil.

Abstract

Lafayette Park, an affordable middle-class residential area in downtown Detroit, is home to the largest collection of buildings designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the world. Today, it is one of Detroit's most racially integrated and economically stable neighborhoods, although it is surrounded by evidence of a city in financial distress. Through interviews with and essays by residents; reproductions of archival material; and new photographs by Karin Jobst, Vasco Roma, and Corine Vermeulen, and previously unpublished photographs by documentary filmmaker Janine Debanné, Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies examines the way that Lafayette Park residents confront and interact with this unique modernist environment. Lafayette Park has not received the level of international attention that other similar projects by Mies have. This may be due in part to its location in Detroit, a city whose most positive qualities are often overlooked in the media. This book is a reaction against the way that iconic modernist architecture is often represented. Whereas other writers may focus on the design intentions of the architect, authors Aubert, Cavar and Chandani seek to show the organic and idiosyncratic ways that the people who live in Lafayette Park actually use the architecture and how this experience, in turn, affects their everyday lives. While there are many publications about abandoned buildings in Detroit and about the city's prosperous past, this book is about a remarkable part of the city as it exists today, in the twenty-first century.

Abstract

The place of water in cities has known a major evolution because of the development of our societies. This has led to an increasing sealing of the soil that has modified the hydrological cycle that can cause floods. The concept of «mains drainage», which had for purpose toquickly evacuate urban water into underground pipes, is no longer adequate. The presence of water in cities must be reconsidered and enhanced through integrated management, to reduce the risk of flooding and pollution. This management, in its overview, sets up specific measures adapted to the urban landscape. Among these, the rain garden,a recent concept, is a multifunctional landscaping system that allows water to be retained and infiltrated. The main objective of this work is to determine and understand the role that a rain garden can play in storm water management in the city. This research is based on the European nomenclature Natural Water Retention Measures to present the concepts of integrated management and rain garden. An analysis grid of documented projects was established and a typology of rain gardens was proposed to understand the characteristics, landscape and hydrological challenges. The case study resulting from this grid allows to make recommendations for the implementation of this management system.

Abstract

The fifth volume of the ‘Strategy’ series is dedicated to urban parks. Through a selection of projects, the magazine identifies and analyses design strategies with which to create accessible, natural paradises for the urban dweller. To study the projects from the perspective of these strategies is to venture into the relationships that emerge between them, and – as a consequence – between the projects themselves. Initiated in 2010, the ‘Strategy’ series defines scalar scopes, evidences disciplinary origins, and composes a grid that overlaps the project to offer a new vision of it.
