This book deals with a group of architectured materials. These are hybrid materials in which the constituents (even strongly dissimilar ones) are combined in a given topology and geometry to provide otherwise conflicting properties. The hybridization presented in the book occurs at various levels - from the molecular to the macroscopic (say, sub-centimeter) ones. This monograph represents a collection of programmatic chapters, defining archimats and summarizing the results obtained by using the geometry-inspired materials design. The area of architectured or geometry-inspired materials has reached a certain level of maturity and visibility for a comprehensive presentation in book form. It is written by a group of authors who are active researchers working on various aspects of architectured materials. Through its 14 chapters, the book provides definitions and descriptions of the archetypes of architectured materials and addresses the various techniques in which they can be designed, optimized, and manufactured. It covers a broad realm of archimats, from the ones occurring in nature to those that have been engineered, and discusses a range of their possible applications. The book provides inspiring and scientifically profound, yet entertaining, reading for the materials science community and beyond.

The book covers the most important materials (naturals, metals, ceramics, polymers and composites) to be used mainly as structural engineering materials. Their main applications based on the properties are described in the first chapters of the book: mechanical, physical and chemical. The second part of the book is dedicated to the conceptual design by properties for a certain structural application: stiffness, mechanical strength, toughness, fatigue resistance, creep, etc., taking into account the weight and the cost. One of the chapters of the second part of the book is focused on the heat treatments of steels in order to improve their resistance to fatigue. The book concludes with a critical comparison between materials considering their production, properties and cost, and the forecast about the utilization of the different fields of materials in structural applications.

Digital fabrication has been termed the “third industrial revolution”, and is promising to revolutionize many disciplines, including most recently the construction sector. Both academia and industry see immense promise in cementitious materials, which lend themselves well to additive manufacturing techniques for digital fabrication in construction. With this recent trend and high interest in this new research field, the 1st RILEM International Conference on Concrete and Digital Fabrication (Digital Concrete 2018) was organized. Since 2014, ETH Zurich has been host for the Swiss National Centre for Competence in Research (NCCR) for Digital Fabrication in Architecture, which is highly interdisciplinary and unique worldwide. In 2018, this NCCR opened the “DFAB House”, which incorporates many digital fabrication principles for architecture. It is also responsible for the 600 m2 Robotic Fabrication Lab and the first robotically built roof in the world. Held in tandem with Rob|Arch 2018, the leading conference for robotics in architecture, RILEM deemed it the right time to combine forces at this new conference, which will be the first large conference to feature the work of the recently created RILEM Technical Committee on Digital Fabrication with Cement-based Materials, among other leaders in this new field worldwide. These conference proceedings bring together papers that take into account the findings in this new area. Papers reflect the varying themes of the conference, including Materials, Processing, Structure, and Applications. .

This volume contains the proceedings of the 8th International PhD Student Workshop on Service Life and Durability of Reinforced Concrete Structures that was held in Marne-la-Vallée, France, on September the 26th and 27th 2016. Topics discussed in the book are related to durability performance of reinforced concrete, service life modelling, prevention, protection and repair. Reinforced concrete structures may prove to be very durable, however, their gradual degradation over time impairing both serviceability and structural safety is still a matter of great practical concern in view of the large economic consequences for assessment, maintenance and repair. Corrosion of steel reinforcement is considered to be the most detrimental process responsible for structural deterioration. Many studies are in progress to develop a comprehensive engineering approach for assessment of the initiation and the propagation period of corrosion in both uncracked and cracked concrete. Modelling of chloride penetration and carbonation has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, however, there is still much debate on several essential aspects such as the chloride threshold level. ASR, and acid, sulphate and frost attack and other mechanisms remain important areas of study. In addition, the interaction between different degradation mechanisms requires further understanding. The worskhop was organised under the auspices of RILEM EAC (Educational Activities Committee), with the aim to bring together young researchers in the field of durability of concrete.

This book focuses on the utilisation of construction waste material as coarse aggregate in making concrete. It discusses in detail the behaviour of recycled aggregate under impact load along with other structural applications, and explains the various quality-improvement techniques for recycled aggregate and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The first chapter describes the importance of recycling construction and demolition waste and the status quo of global construction and demolition waste recycling. The second chapter examines the recycled aggregate production methodology. Subsequent chapters address the physical and mechanical characteristics and different research findings, as well as the engineering properties of recycled aggregate concrete. Further, the interrelationships among the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete are discussed. The book also explores long-term properties like shrinkage and creep, durability properties, and microstructural characterisation. It will serve as a valuable resource for researchers and professionals alike.

Origami structures have the ability to be easily fabricated from planar forms, enable the deployment of large structures from small volumes, and are potentially reconfigurable. These characteristics have led to an increased interest in theoretical and computational origami among engineers from across the world. In this book, the principles of origami, active materials, and solid mechanics are combined to present a full theory for origami structures. The focus is on origami structures morphed via active material actuation and formed from sheets of finite thickness. The detailed theoretical derivations and examples make this an ideal book for engineers and advanced students who aim to use origami principles to develop new applications in their field.

This book presents a state of the art in mortar characterisation, experimentation with and applications of new mortars for conservation and repair of historic buildings. This volume includes the following topics: characterisation of historic mortars (methods, interpretation, application of results), development of new materials for conservation (compatibility, durability, mix designs), the history of mortar technology and fundamental experimental studies of material properties. The papers have been selected from those presented at the 3rd Historic Mortars Conference, held in Glasgow, Scotland, September 11-14th 2013. All the papers here underwent a two stage peer review process, for the conference and again for this volume. In some cases this has resulted in a revision and updating of content.

The book offers a unified view on classical results and recent advances in the dynamics of nonconservative systems. The theoretical fundamentals are presented systematically and include: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, non-holonomic constraints, Lyapunov stability theory, Krein theory of spectra of Hamiltonian systems and modes of negative and positive energy, anomalous Doppler effect, reversible systems, sensitivity analysis of non-self-adjoint operators, dissipation-induced instabilities, local and global instabilities. They are applied to engineering situations such as the coupled mode flutter of wings, flags and pipes, flutter in granular materials, piezoelectric mechanical metamaterials, wave dynamics of infinitely long structures, radiative damping, stability of high-speed trains, experimental realization of follower forces, soft-robot locomotion, wave energy converters, friction-induced instabilities, brake squeal, non-holonomic sailing, dynamics of moving continua, and stability of bicycles and walking robots. The book responds to a demand in the modern theory of nonconservative systems coming from the growing number of scientific and engineering disciplines including physics, fluid and solids mechanics, fluid-structure interactions, and modern multidisciplinary research areas such as biomechanics, micro- and nanomechanics, optomechanics, robotics, and material science. It is targeted at both young and experienced researchers and engineers working in fields associated with the dynamics of structures and materials. The book will help to get a comprehensive and systematic knowledge on the stability, bifurcations and dynamics of nonconservative systems and establish links between approaches and methods developed in different areas of mechanics and physics and modern applied mathematics.
