Seit dem 14. Jahrhundert nistete sich Papier in Europa in nahezu jede kulturelle Nische ein – nicht nur in Briefen, Rechnungsbüchern, Akten und Publikationen wird dies materiell sichtbar. In Anlehnung an Materialitätsfragen zur historischen Kommunikation interpretiert die Studie die Epoche 'Frühe Neuzeit' (circa 1400-1800) als eine papierne Epoche, in der handgemachtes Papier nicht nur überall benötigt, sondern auch produziert und gehandelt wurde. Mithilfe von wirtschaftssoziologischen, kommunikationshistorischen und buchwissenschaftlichen Ansätzen wird die Materialität und Sozialität eines wirtschaftlichen Aktivitätenbereichs thematisiert, in dem jährlich Abermillionen papierne Waren bewegt, gelagert und verkauft worden sind. Als exemplarischer Einblick in den historischen Papierhandel dienen die Märkte für den Handel mit Papier in Amsterdam. Biographische Informationen Daniel Bellingradt (1978) arbeitet seit 2014 als Juniorprofessor für Buchwissenschaft, insbesondere Historische Kommunikationsforschung an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Nach Studium der Geschichtswissenschaft, Anglistik, Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft in Berlin und Dublin folgte die Promotion in Berlin (2010). Der Mitherausgeber des Jahrbuchs für Kommunikationsgeschichte forscht und lehrt zu Aspekten einer Medien- und Kommunikationsgeschichte der Neuzeit.

The untold story of how paper revolutionized art making during the Renaissance, exploring how it shaped broader concepts of authorship, memory, and the transmission of ideas over the course of three centuries. In the late medieval and Renaissance period, paper transformed society-not only through its role in the invention of print but also in the way it influenced artistic production. The Art of Paper tells the history of this medium in the context of the artist's workshop from the thirteenth century, when it was imported to Europe from Africa, to the sixteenth century, when European paper was exported to the colonies of New Spain. In this pathbreaking work, Caroline Fowler approaches the topic culturally rather than technically, deftly exploring the way paper shaped concepts of authorship, preservation, and the transmission of ideas during this period. This book both tells a transcultural history of paper from the Cairo Genizah to the Mesoamerican manuscript and examines how paper became "Europeanized" through the various mechanisms of the watermark, colonization, and the philosophy of John Locke. Ultimately, Fowler demonstrates how paper-as refuse and rags transformed into white surface-informed the works for which it was used, as well as artists' thinking more broadly, across the early modern world.

Kuri gathers his resources from a variety of sites before combining them in a manner that draws upon tradition of assemblage with a nod to Surrealist montage. The catalogue shows, amongst others, new pieces produced for the exhibition, revealing both the diversity of Kuri's formal approach and the consistency of his underlying themes: notions of commercial and cultural value, consumerism, as well as material and its poetic (mis)use.
