"Why has jewellery and body adornment often been marginalized in studies of modernist art and design? This study explores the relationship between jewellery, modernism and modernity from the 'jazz age' to the second world war in order to challenge the view that these portable art forms have only a minor role to play in histories of modernism. From the masterworks of the Parisian jewellery houses to the film and photography of Man Ray, this study seeks to present jewellery in a new light, where issues of representation and display are considered to be as important in the creation of a modern 'jewellery culture' as the objects themselves. Drawing on material from museums, archives, contemporary journals, memoirs, literary and theoretical texts, this study shows how the emergence of modern jewellery began to seriously question conventional notions of body adornment."--Bloomsbury Publishing Why has jewellery and body adornment often been marginalized in studies of modernist art and design? Jewellery is a universal cultural phenomenon; it tells something about the people who have worn it and their actions. It is worn worldwide and has an endless variety of appearances and meanings. Jewellery marks, all around the globe, milestones in life. With a piece of jewellery you can cherish dear memories of people who have died, but also radiate a position of power, a political or religious conviction, states Marjan Unger, the famous and illustrious Dutch theorist and publicist in her 2010 dissertation. Among all texts on adornment and jewellery, this essay stands out as an elementary standard work. It is an absolute 'must-read' for every jewellery enthusiast. It will sharpen perspectives of students and experts, and for any interested laymen it will certainly open new horizons of insight on adornment and the ever-present phenomenon of jewellery.

The fascination with personal adornment is universal. It is a preoccupation that is primal, instinctive, and uniquely human. 'Jewelry' encompasses a seemingly endless number of ornaments produced across time and in all cultures. The range of materials and techniques used in its construction is extraordinary, even revolutionary, with new substances and methods of fabrication added with every generation. In any given society, master artisans have devoted their time, energy and talent to the fine art of jewellery making, creating some of the most spectacular objects known to humankind. This volume, geared toward jewellery makers, scholars, scientists, students and fashionistas alike, begins with a lively introduction that offers a cultural history of jewellery and its production. The main text provides information on the most common, iconic and culturally significant forms of jewellery and also covers materials, techniques, and manufacturing processes. Containing eighty colour illustrations, this guide will be invaluable to all those wishing to increase their understanding and enjoyment of the art of jewellery
