Abstract

While hay meadows are in decline in Wallonia, quarries offer opportunities yet poorly explored for the development of this habitat. Parcels were created following different methods in two Walloon quarries (Hermalle-sous-Huy and Marche-les-Dames, Belgium) as part of the Life in Quarries project. The backfill materials that were used for the creations were overburden (part of the soil between the surface and the rock), sludge from settling ponds, lime wastes and stony materials. We monitored the created parcels in order to highlight the possibilities provided by different backfill materials for the creation of hay meadows. We carried out phytosociological inventories and we analysed the edaphic conditions in the created parcels. We analysed the taxonomic and functional composition of plant communities and we carried out multivariate analyses comparing the created grasslands with reference grasslands. This allowed us to assess which methods of creation show the best restoration success and which functional strategies were used by the created communities. We found that overburden are suitable for the creation of hay meadows when the sowing material is mainly composed with Poaceae. While the creation of hay meadows is less conceivable on the other backfill materials, they can provide valuable ecosystem services, preserve the genetic heritage of hay meadow species on a local scale or help to strengthen endangered species populations.

Abstract

Tinus Vermeersch reveals his own surreal universe to us, by means of drawings, paintings, sculptures and ceramics. In this uni-verse we often find traces of a human presence, yet it is characterized by a sense of seclusiveness. Both his visual language as well as his chosen materials, remind us of a long-lost time. His technique recalls the drawings and paintings of Jheronimus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel. The origin of the figures who inhabit his paintings and drawings can be found in anthropology and more specifically in the old animistic and shamanic traditions of the indigenous peoples. Tinus Vermeersch calls these figures 'Tegumen', meaning 'cover' or 'shell' in Latin. Tinus Vermeersch distinguishes himself from many other contemporary artists by his affinity for the craftsmanship that is so specific to the traditional media he works with. The hundreds of ceramic tiles, all drawn by hand, prove this craftsmanship. Exhibition: Be-Part, Kortrijk, Belgium (28.07.-06.10.2019).

Abstract

This book is dedicated to an outstanding architectural monument of medieval Armenia – the church of the Holy Cross, built in the tenth century on the island of Ałt‘amar on Lake Van, and a UNESCO world heritage site. This jewel of architecture has been researched mainly from an art historical perspective. The current multi-author volume offers diverse studies aimed at placing the construction of the church in its proper historical, political, religious, and spiritual context. It explores the intellectual climate in the Kingdom of Vaspurakan during the reign of its founder, King Gagik Arcruni, the Kingdom’s relations with Byzantium and the Abbasids, analyzes local historiography, biblical exegesis, hagiography, veneration of the True Cross, and royal ideology. Novel interpretations of architectural features and sculptural decorations close the volume. Abstract

The book ""Quality and Production of Forage"" is intended to keep readers updatedon the developments occurring in this field. As it is apparent that livestockanimals are important throughout the world because of the meat, milk and eggthey produce, knowledge about the forages available to animals must also beconsidered for increased production, quality and efficiency. This book providesinformation that readers will find considerably invaluable about forage feeds, suchas grass, legumes, and straw. The book is composed of ten papers, focusing on awide range of research activities and topics that feature the following concepts offorage: the effect of conservation method on forage protein value; Microbial thecomposition and mycotoxin content in forage; genetic diversity of forages; timelysowing to maximize yield for both grain and biomass; ensiling treatments onforage quality; the qualitative characteristics of different accessions of new foragespecies; forage policy influencing feed costs; feeding forage on animal health;high-protein tropical forages as alternative sources for poultry; impact of foragesin poultry diet and significance of forages in sustainable poultry productionsystems. This book will be an invaluable reference for students and professionalsin agricultural science and grassland and animal husbandry researches.
