Abstract

The art of Frans Neels (Ypres, 1935) is as invisible as the artist himself. At a time when everyone can fantasize a upholstered bio on social media, that seems an insurmountable deficit or worse, a glowing reproach of lack of ambition. Not so for Frans Neels, who is in the honorable company of Montaigne. He also published his world-renowned essays in 1580 not as a monument to church or public crossroads, but as a friend service. It's good that I find a corner in the library or that I'm doing a neighbor a favor to find me again, he wrote in an introduction. Neels also thought that way and barely published and exhibited. He has been keeping his consciously reclusive position on the margins for 84 years. He often made his work with a lot of delay in ridiculously low runs. Often it was delivered to friends for free. So why dedicate a publication to Frans Neels? Because his figure gives a refreshing look at the busy artistic scene in Antwerp from the key year 1958 to today, but also because his conscious attitude on the sidelines is and was a courageous strategy. His path of life crossed that of many fellow artists, but never was he looking for a gangmaker or a fellow warrior. Do something to impress never was his way. The desire to draw his own playing field, no one could take away from him. Looking back, it turns out that desire is a multifaceted adventure with many side paths. It resulted in remarkable texts, collages and works of art that have transcended their initial modesty.

Abstract

Collage and Literature analyzes how and why the history of literature and art changed irrevocably beginning in the early years of the twentieth century, and what that change has meant for late modernism and postmodernism. Starting from Pablo Picasso's 1912 gesture, breaking the fundamental logic of representation, of pasting a piece of oilcloth onto a canvas, and moving up to Kenneth Goldsmith's 2015 reading of an autopsy report of an unarmed young black man shot by police (which he framed as a poem entitled Michael Brown's Body) this volume moves through a series of case studies encapsulating issues of juxtaposition and framing, the central ways identify collage. Its thesis is that collage-and, in fact, only collage-meaningfully overcomes formal and generic boundaries between the literary and the non-literary. The overwriting of these traditional boundaries happens in the service of collage's anti-narrative drive, a drive that may be, in turn, interruptive or destructive. The expansion of collage's horizons- broadly, to include the use of radical juxtaposition in the arts-reveals a surprisingly wide range of American artists and writers using the logic of juxtaposition as they imagine new worlds, disrupt accepted narratives about society and art, and create meaning through form as much as through paraphrasable content. In addressing a wide range of contested issues, recent artists realize the shocking force of collage. By recovering this shock, Collage and Literature restores collage to its multimedia origins in order to reveal its powerful and political affects

Abstract

Abstract

The 2019/20 issue of 'The Serving Library Annual' is entirely devoted to the late Italian designer, artist, inventor and polymath Bruno Munari. The core of the annual is the first English translation of 'Obvious Code' (Cioice ovvio), the 1971 collection of Munari's own writings, sketches and poems about his own work, published by arrangement with Corraini, who issued the book's anastatic edition in 2017. It includes iconic design objects such as the Abitacolo, ground-breaking artworks such as his 1952 series of hand-made projection slides, and little known rhymes about the art market, as well as an original piece from his "unreadable books" series. In the margins, dozens of artists, designers, writers and curators have been invited to annotate Munari's texts - with a sketch or a quotation, an in-depth analysis, a fragment of conversation, a free association - as a testament to the depth of the influence exerted on international art by an often underacknowledged pioneer, whose visual experiments were so iconic as to become a self-evident part of visual culture, an anonymous invention: an obvious code.
