Abstract

This case study looks closely at the development of the Apollo space program, over the eight years from the announcement by J.F. Kennedy that an astronaut would be sent to moon and back again, until the actual moon landing. It reveals that, contrary to the legend, the achievement was not so much a giant leap as a million tiny steps.

Abstract

"MOONBIT is a hybrid work comprised of experimental poetry and a critical theory of the poetics and politics of computer code. It offers an extended intellectual and creative engagement with the affordances of computer software through multiple readings and re-writings of a singular text, the source code of the Apollo 11 Guidance Computer or the "AGC." MOONBIT re-marks and remixes the code that made space travel possible. Half of this book is erasure poetry that uses the AGC code as the source text, building on the premise that code can speak beyond its functional purpose. When we think about the 1960s U.S. space program and obscure scientific computer code, we might not first think about the Watts riots, Shakespeare, Winnie the Pooh, T.S. Eliot, or scatological jokes. Yet these cultural references and influences along with many more are scattered throughout the body of the code that powered the compact digital computer that successfully guided astronauts to the Moon and back and in July of 1969. MOONBIT unravels and rewrites the many embedded cultural references that were braided together within the language resources of mid-century computer code. MOONBIT also provides a gentle, non-expert introduction to the text of the AGC code, to digital poetics, and to critical code studies. Outlining a capacious interpretive practice, MOONBIT takes up all manner of imaginative decodings and recodings of this code. It introduces some of the major existing approaches to the study of code and culture while provide multiple readings of the source code along with an explanation and theorization of the way in which the code works, as both a computational and a cultural text"--

Abstract

July 2019 marks 50 years since Neil Armstrong took his famous first steps on the surface of the Moon. As people around the world celebrate the anniversary of this great American achievement, they might wonder why there have been no further human missions to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. This book assesses the legacy of the Apollo missions based on several decades of space developments since the program’s end. The question of why we haven’t sent humans back to the Moon is explored through a multidisciplinary lens that weaves together technological and historical perspectives. The nine manned Apollo missions, including the six that landed on the Moon, are described here by an author who has 50 years of experience in the space industry and whose work spanned the Apollo 8–13 missions. The final section of the book provides a comprehensive assessment of today’s programs and current plans for sending humans to the Moon.

Abstract

" La 4e de couverture indique : "The monastic complex of Bawit began to be excavated by the French Institute for Oriental Archaeology (IFAO) in 1901, and has produced some of the finest examples of Coptic art and architecture. These were documented in 1911 in MIFAO 13, Fouilles à Baouît I. The sequel to this work was never published. However, the set of archival materials presented here includes a short introduction by Émile Chassinat (1868-1948), along with most of the plates that he had already laid out in preparation for the proofs of the volume. It proves that Chassinat had hoped to present the scholarly world with the entirety of his work at Bawit. By publishing this sequel in the MIFAO series, more than a century later, we pay tribute to Émile Chassinat's work. Here we encounter the scholar, the director of the IFAO, the archaeologist in charge of the excavations, the epigrapher, the photographer, and even the printer, among the other talents of this meticulous author. This volume, finally completed, is being published just as the excavations recently resumed by the Musée du Louvre and the IFAO have explored the area where the churches are situated. It will be followed by a monograph on the so-called north church and a study of the large church D, where excavations are still ongoing."

Abstract

Freed from Athenian guardianship in 314 BCE, at a time of geopolitical changes which marked the beginnings of the Hellenistic period in the Aegean world, Delos gradually built up its political and economic independence. The Delian community redefined, during the third and second centuries, the central place that the island had constantly occupied in the economic, financial and cultural flows of the Mediterranean. This study is mainly based on epigraphic accounting sources, including more than five hundred accounts and engraved inventories that were visible in the sanctuary of Apollo, but also on numismatic sources and archaeological remains on the seafront, in order to re-consider the question of Delos’ place in the Hellenistic economy. Far from being an exception to be excluded…

Abstract

The vibrant intellectual, social and political climate of mid eighteenth-century Europe presented opportunities and challenges for artists and musicians alike. This book focuses on Mozart the man and musician as he responds to different aspects of that world. It reveals his views on music, aesthetics and other matters; on places in Austria and across Europe that shaped his life; on career contexts and environments, including patronage, activities as an impresario, publishing, theatrical culture and financial matters; on engagement with performers and performance, focusing on Mozart's experiences as a practicing musician; and on reception and legacy from his own time through to the present day. Probing diverse Mozartian contexts in a variety of ways, the contributors reflect the vitality of existing scholarship and point towards areas primed for further study. This volume is essential reading for students and scholars of late eighteenth-century music and for Mozart aficionados and music lovers in general.
