Dans ses discours devant le Parlement européen et le Conseil de l'Europe, le pape François n'a pas hésité à esquisser l'image d'une Europe blessée, qui traverse une profonde crise de confiance et d'espérance. Le christianisme est, lui aussi, concerné par cette crise : sa force d'inspiration semble être affaiblie. Comme l'Europe, il se trouve devant l'alternative : dissolution ou réforme. Christoph Theobald relève ce défi, le prenant pour point de départ d'une traduction contemporaine du croire, espérer et aimer, offert par la tradition biblique et chrétienne. Il se laisse guider par la question : comment témoigner aujourd'hui d'une espérance commune et comment laisser advenir une confiance mutuelle ? Ses réflexions le conduisent à comprendre l'être chrétien comme une manière de vivre selon une sainte hospitalité, susceptible de produire de la confiance, d'engendrer de l'espérance et d'offrir à une Europe blessée une nouvelle force de vie. Membre de la Compagnie de Jésus, Christoph Theobald est Professeur de théologie fondamentale et dogmatique (Centre Sèvres). Il est rédacteur en chef de la revue Recherches de science religieuse et a déjà publié, au Cerf, La réception du concile Vatican II et Vatican II comme style.

This essay deals with the missionary work of the Society of Jesus in today’s Micronesia from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Although the Jesuit missionaries wanted to reach Japan and other Pacific islands, such as the Palau and Caroline archipelagos, the crown encouraged them to stay in the Marianas until 1769 (when the Society of Jesus was expelled from the Philippines) to evangelize the native Chamorros as well as to reinforce the Spanish presence on the fringes of the Pacific empire. In 1859, a group of Jesuit missionaries returned to the Philippines, but they never officially set foot on the Marianas during the nineteenth century. It was not until the twentieth century that they went back to Micronesia, taking charge of the mission on the Northern Marianas along with the Caroline and Marshall Islands, thus returning to one of the cradles of Jesuit martyrdom in Oceania.

Um über Wechselwirkungen zwischen Religion und Politik aufzuklären, thematisiert das Buch religiös imprägnierte Kriegsauffassungen Israels und Roms, der Christen und Muslime. Es unterrichtet über Gewalttheoreme und Gewaltgeschichten der monotheistischen Weltreligionen, deren Glaubens- und Politikbegriffe bewirkten, dass auf der Weltbühne von heute Religionen widersprüchliche Funktionen erfüllen.
