The scholia to Thucydides, which are marginalia found in Medieval Greek manuscripts, provide us with the remainders of valuable ancient and Byzantine commentaries on the verbal and textual difficulties presented by Thucydides?s complex texts. The last edition of these scholia appeared in 1927, and this publication fails to live up to important contemporary requirements? namely, to base the text on the visual examination all of extant manuscript material and to winnow out the most valuable older textual elements from less important late-Byzantine supplements. The new edition meets both of these scholarly expectations in exemplary fashion.

Thucydide a eu raison d’affirmer que son Histoire de la guerre du Péloponnèse était « un capital impérissable ». Car de nombreux penseurs et acteurs politiques en Occident ont été impressionnés à partir du XVIIe siècle par ses analyses d’une guerre totale et des mécanismes politiques qui y sont rattachés. Ce livre se propose d’aborder un des problèmes qui a particulièrement préoccupé l’historien grec : le conflit entre force et droit dans un monde bipolaire. Le point de vue de Thucydide y sera analysé à travers les textes qui traitent de l’impérialisme athénien et de trois épisodes qui en éclairent la portée : le soulèvement de Mytilène contre son alliée Athènes en 427 ; le sort malheureux de Platée, alliée d’Athènes, après la victoire de Thèbes, alliée de Sparte, en 427 ; la négociation déséquilibrée entre la puissante Athènes et la petite île de Mélos en 416 (4e de couverture)

Herodotus of Halicarnassus and Thucydides the Athenian were the two most famous and earliest (fifth century bce) of the Greek historians whose work survives; their subject was the wars between the Greek cities and the Persian Empire and later those between the Greek cities themselves. Their names are frequently linked and their work compared and contrasted: Herodotus' history ranged adventurously both in space and time; Thucydides limited himself to the events of his own day. Herodotus' work is certainly more fun to read; Thucydides approaches more closely to the modern conception of 'scientific' history-writing.This book seeks to explore the reception of their writings from the Byzantine era until today, following the ups and downs of their scholarly reputations. Herodotus has at times been much despised and only recently reassessed and taken more seriously. Thucydides has been more consistently revered, even if sometimes thought narrow and boring. Today, he still attracts readers from disciplines far from the classical world. The essays in this collection range from Sir Walter Ralegh's History of the World and Isaac Newton's Chronology to the coming of narratology.
