Située au coeur de la Méditerranée, regardant vers l'Europe et vers l'Orient, la Tunisie s'est nourrie des influences des civilisations qui l'ont tour à tour habitée pour rayonner bien au-delà de son petit territoire. Sophie Bessis nous plonge dans l'histoire de ce pays trois fois millénaire pour en saisir la richesse et la singularité. De la fière Carthage, qui a su tenir tête à Rome, à la bouillonnante Ifriqiya médiévale, de la conquête arabe à l'instauration du Protectorat français, du "despotisme éclairé" de Bourguiba aux espoirs nés de la Révolution de 2011, l'auteure interroge la nature de l'"exception tunisienne" et nous éclaire sur la façon dont s'est construite la "tunisianité". Etat longtemps qualifié d'exemplaire pour sa sécularisation et les droits accordés aux femmes, initiatrice des "Printemps arabes", la Tunisie reste le symbole d'une démocratie possible en pays arabe. Mais celle-ci est menacée par la proximité d'un environnement régional troublé et par l'implantation sur son territoire de foyers de radicalisme religieux. La Tunisie doit aussi composer avec la fracture millénaire entre un littoral anciennement urbanisé et économiquement privilégié et un intérieur qui se sent délaissé, fragilisant l'unité d'un peuple écartelé entre des héritages contradictoires. En revisitant chaque étape de ce riche passé dans cette synthèse érudite et réfléchie, Sophie Bessis interroge l'avenir d'une nation entrée depuis 2011 dans une nouvelle séquence de son histoire.

This report focused on studying the Arab family strength and challenges in Qatar, Jordan and Tunisia, and how Arab families use their strengths to overcome the challenges. The report concluded that there are seven important themes in family strength emerged: responsibility, support, good communication, respect, conveying traditions, resilience and love. There are six family challenges identified: societal changes, the need for women empowerment, absence of engaged fathers, financial issues, interference from extended family members and conflict in the family or poor communication. The overall findings from this research can be used by communities and states to help guide and develop educational programs, strategies and initiatives to strengthen and empower families throughout the Arab world.
