Abstract

Abstract

In the early 1970s photographer and documentary filmmaker Michael Ford left graduate school and a college teaching position in Boston, Massachusetts, packed his young family into a van, and headed to rural Mississippi, where he spent the next four years recording everyday life through interviews, still photographs, and film. The project took him to Oxford (in Lafayette County), as well as to Marshall, Panola, and Tate Counties, a remote area north of Sardis Lake. His efforts resulted in the award-winning documentary film Homeplace (1975), but none of the still photographs from this time were ever published. With this illustrated volume, those photographs are now available and offer a valuable window onto the rural, local culture of northern Mississippi at that time. These moving photographs illustrate Ford's experiences as an apprentice to blacksmith Marion Randolph Hall, his visits to Hal Waldrip's General Store in Chulahoma, a day spent with AG Newsom and his crew making molasses, and Othar Turner's barbecues accompanied by traditional African American fife-and-drum music. They also capture the evocative landscape of the Mississippi hill country and the everyday lives of its residents. In 2013 Ford returned to his adopted homeplace, camera in hand, only to find that most everything had changed—or was gone. This photo essay project juxtaposes the rural Mississippi of the 1970s and the mid-2010s with Ford's personal reflections drawn from his journals, interviews, and archival notes.

Abstract

This book investigates how the clay tablet record of the Hittite festival tradition interfaced with the reality of Hittite festival performance. Previous studies of Hittite festival texts have assumed that the main festival action was recorded in a more or less neutral, objective fashion, i.e. recording what was essential to the festival as a whole.Through an examination of the so-called ‘outline’ festival texts, as well as a new study of the four Old Hittite manuscripts of the KI.LAM Great Assembly – one of the spectactular highpoints of the Hittite festival calendar – it is argued instead that the Hittite festival texts recorded the multiple perspectives, based on their specialized needs, of the cultic actors tasked with correct performance of the rites. The multi-perspective hypothesis of Hittite festival texts leads to a reassessment of the Hittite festival corpus as it is preserved. Instead of interpreting Hittite festival texts as products of scholastic learning or documentation, the texts are shown to be, at least in origin, the working documents of expert practitioners produced in the planning and production of festival performances. This interpretation of multiple, functionally-specialized perspectives for the Hittite festival texts carries implications for the festival corpus as a whole.

Abstract

"Examining the ways in which Iranians have argued, debated, and struggled over national symbols throughout the last four decades, Merhavy focuses on national symbols such as Cyrus the Great and Persepolis and the ways in which they have been interpreted by Iranian publicists, government officials, and religious leaders. He examines continuity versus change triggered by the revolution of 1979, which culminated in the establishment of the Islamic Republic, and demonstrates the limited nature of the state's ability to influence society on a broad level. Merhavy shows how religious, cultural, and social institutions are influenced by, and influence in turn, the processes of modernization in contemporary Iran and, ultimately, suggests that we must rethink some of our basic assumptions about the dominant role the modern nation-state plays in shaping society"--

Abstract

"The Humour and Pathos of Anglo-Indian Life" is an adventure novel on the life of a group of English men and women. The group is travelling back from India aboard the steamship 'Elephanta' as they reflect on the recent scenes enacted in India. Mr. John Marston had shown great foresight in anticipating the rebellion of the Indians against white rule. He had thus acquired and repaired an old mud fort which he equipped and stocked with supplies, before inviting all Europeans to take shelter when the uprising came. A move that doubtless had saved the now occupants of the ship when invasion of the Indians came. With the fight behind them and now safely on board the ship, a romance or two will bud among the shipmates before they reach home.

Abstract

An introduction to an original poetic voice from eastern Ukraine with deep roots in the unique cultural landscape of post-Soviet devastation "Everyone can find something, if they only look carefully," reads one of the memorable lines from this first collection of poems in English by the world†'renowned Ukrainian author Serhiy Zhadan. These robust and accessible narrative poems feature gutsy portraits of life on wartorn and poverty-ravaged streets, where children tally the number of local deaths, where mothers live with low expectations, and where romance lives like a remote memory. In the tradition of Tom Waits, Charles Bukowski, and William S. Burroughs, Zhadan creates a new poetics of loss, a daily crusade of testimonial, a final witness of abandoned lives in a claustrophobic universe where "every year there's less and less air." Yet despite the grimness of these portraits, Zhadan's poems are familiar and enchanting, lit by the magic of everyday detail, leaving readers with a sense of hope, knowing that the will of a people "will never let it be / like it was before."
